In 2014 I had the opportunity of going to a luncheon in Denver where Daren Dickson, LMFT and Todd Dickson shared about how their Compass Circle model was playing out at this school in Nashville. As a 25 year old first grade teacher I went for the free food and midday break, but I left with so much more. Those 30 mins were some of the most inspiring I had experienced as a young educator and I had a sense that I wanted this practice to be a part of my future and the future of my students. In 2018 I had the privilege of joining Compass Camp and bringing this practice to my staff and students in Northwest Denver. As a principal, this practice gave me an opportunity to get to know my staff differently and to experience the power of what it means to have ritualized support and connection in a school community. I left most of my student circle observations moved to joyful tears as I witnessed 3rd, 4th and 5th graders share openly with one another about their greatest strengths and challenges. I was blown away by their emotional regulation at such young ages. In 2021 I joined the Powered by Compass team at Valor Collegiate Academies and I wake up everyday inspired to support human connection and growth. I have both seen and experienced how this practice strengthens connections, supports true academic success and promotes compassion in self and for others. Integrity builds trust, and being a leader of integrity means that you are able to take genuine ownership of your actions, accepting the outcomes whether or not they're what you intended. 'Taking Responsibility' is one of the most important practices we cultivate with leaders because it allows their teams to see humility modeled and the leader's commitment toward continued growth, fostering openness and trust.
