"The prevailing orientation of medical and public health ignores criminal dynamics driving recurring shootings at specific places and downplays the potential for police, prosecutors and correction officials to play a meaningful role in halting violence." The U.S. Surgeon General’s first advisory that named gun violence a public health crisis omits key research and ignores the role of criminal justice in tackling the problem, Anthony A. Braga argues in his latest for Vital City. https://lnkd.in/eUPUpgG5

On the anniversary of 9/11, architect Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA asks: What will it take for the powers that be in New York to take the architecture and planning community as seriously as they did after 9/11? https://lnkd.in/eRnkacvB

"As a city, especially during crises, we’ve always put our strength and know-how toward collective action in the public interest," writes Adem Bunkeddeko, one of our board members, in a recent issue of Vital City. New York City’s students are heading back to school today — but in far fewer numbers than previous years. Ten years ago, 1.1 million students went to district-run public schools in the five boroughs, whereas this fall, about 900,000 are expected to enroll. That’s the result of family outmigration, falling birth rates and the growth of charter schools. Leading urban education scholar Pedro A. Noguera argues in Vital City today that rather than reactively shutter schools — a process that invariably hits low-income neighborhoods hardest — the City should start doing strategic planning now to serve the shrinking student population better. In order for a smaller system to meet families’ needs, Noguera argues that individual schools may need to consolidate and get larger. https://lnkd.in/e46Fqy-H

There are so many reasons to love NYC. Our board member, Adem Bunkeddeko, offers a few in the new issue of Vital City as he reflects movingly on his experience growing up here as the child of war refugees. “My upbringing in New York City helped shape my moral sensibility to imbue a deep commitment to others who had even less than my family. That my parents, despite their struggle, could find a way to create a better life for their children, but also lend a hand to those in more dire straits than themselves, left a lasting mark on my conscience.” https://lnkd.in/gjJhDzTu

Vital City's piece last week on the "City Ugly" movement sweeping NYC was published in Crain's New York Business this week. Architect, urbanist, and author Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA writes: "As we rebuild New York post-pandemic, we should not settle for our moribund status quo. Leaders – and we in their communities – must strive higher. We should, together, create a city of jobs, justice and joy — a city of shared and meaningful beauty." https://lnkd.in/erdyuQMW

"Vital City has been taking a look at the numbers because the mayor’s favorite mantra of “crime down, jobs up,” at least on the crime side, doesn’t square with New Yorkers’ jitters." In a report released last week, Vital City found that many crimes — including serious felonies, misdemeanors and violations — are higher than they’ve been in a decade. And serious felonies are higher than they’ve been since 2007. Vital City's founder Elizabeth Glazer advises politicians to recalibrate their rhetoric to fit the facts in her latest article, both to build public trust and to allow Gotham’s problems to be accurately diagnosed and addressed. https://lnkd.in/eat4eF7y #NYC #PublicSafety #CrimeRates

“New Yorkers continue to suffer daily indignities like purse-snatching and potholes, small dangers that corrode the urban soul and make us worry that the city has once again become ungovernable.” The eyes of the world have been focused on Chicago this week — and architect and Vital City contributing writer Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA thinks that people need to look and learn from the Windy City’s history as the birthplace of the City Beautiful movement. The movement believed that glorious and uplifting architecture and public spaces could promote a better urban environment for all. Chakrabarti argues today in Vital City that it’s not City Beautiful that dominates Gotham today, but City Ugly — the pursuit of the lowest common denominator. Chakrabarti urges New Yorkers not to accept bad architecture and the daily indignities of trash, run-down train stations and quality-of-life offenses.
