On May 12, 1862, former South Carolina Representative Robert Smalls executed a daring plan to lead his family and 12 others to #freedom. His bravery didn't end there; he went on to serve throughout the Civil War and helped the Union secure victory. After the war, Smalls became a leading advocate for public education and served five terms in the House of Representatives. I am thankful that the South Carolina House of Representatives has passed a bipartisan bill to construct a monument in honor of Robert Smalls. This long-overdue effort recognizes Smalls’ immense contributions to South Carolinian and American history, and his tireless efforts to advance #education and #civilrights. Preserving Black history is deeply important to me and essential in ensuring future generations have a way to reflect on the lived experience of the generations before them. I encourage everyone to learn more about the incredible life and legacy of Robert Smalls. Read more. https://bit.ly/4bqkQAI
