The increasing frequency and intensity of destructive wildfires are not only affecting human health, but wildlife too. A new study found that one audio index used to monitor biodiversity fell by more than 15% following particularly smoky conditions. https://lnkd.in/gg7mese9 “Because birds are so sensitive to air pollution, we expect that birds are especially vulnerable to smoke. During the window in which our sites were impacted by smoke, we did see the biodiversity index and the acoustic complexity index decline, and it stayed reduced after the event.” - Olivia V. Sanderfoot, Ph.D., a lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles This is why the technologies being developed in #XPRIZEWildfire are so crucial. Delighted to announce that Canada has just granted us a patent, for "A System and Method for Modelling System Behaviour", Patent No. 2,953,385. This is yet another patent for our novel ML/AI algorithms. The Canadian patent is particularly significant for two reasons: First, Canada is a world-leading centre in AI research. It isn't always publicly appreciated that many of the world's innovations in AI happened in Canada: Geoffrey Hinton's breakthroughs in 'Deep Learning' artificial neural networks, the work of Goodfellow et al. in generative adversarial networks, and so on. Second, when I first drafted my patent in early 2014 in Australia, describing novel forms of evolutionary ML and generative adversarial AI, the provisional patent application had 70 claims. Subsequently the Australian Patent Office, acting as the International Examiner, issued a preliminary finding that, internationally, _each_ of these claims was novel, inventive and of industrial application. Subsequently other patent offices such as the United States have gradually been going through these claims by batches, and slowly approving patents for each batch of claims. In contrast the Canadian Patent Office went through the entire set of claims (now made slightly more concise, at 66) and has now approved the lot. O, Canada!!!
