How can you ensure clear and concise PR messaging?

We love an elaborate statement and beautifully crafted headline, but so many times what’s written and reviewed is done by PR people like you and PR people too close to the organization. I love running draft headlines or quotes my family members outside of the business or PR profession. Even my kids will give me a gut check to make sure it’s easy enough to understand. Nothing will put you in place like candid feedback from a child who doesn’t even know what you do for a living.

What are the most innovative ways to build a strong relationship with the media?

Nobody likes the friend that only reaches out when they need something. Relationships with the media work the same way. Support their articles on social, applaud their career growth, reach out with questions of how you can best support them -- ask how they are doing! Media, they're just like us!

What are the best ways to keep up with press release distribution trends?

There are typically three messaging structures for any given campaign. One that comes from the brand. One that comes from the media. And one that comes from the consumer. In a perfect world they're all the same, but more times than not, each get watered down or morph into the audiences interpretation. The closer you can get to the consumer's version -- how they speak, where they listen and why they share, the more likely you are to have success.

What are the key skills of an effective mentee in PR?

Mentorship takes all sorts of forms. It's important to diversify your roster -- similar to a board of directors. Balance mentors who can challenge you with those who can support you in all areas of your career and interests.

How can you identify the best mentors in Public Relations?

It can be intimidating for cold outreach. Leverage 2nd connections with introductions from shared connections. Also leverage programs and organizations that may have mentorship programs or directories that highlight industry professionals making themselves available for mentorship opportunities.
