NRL Interns and New Hires Visited HSC-2 and the USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) On August 15 a group of summer interns and recent hires from the Tactical Electronic Warfare Division (TEWD) of NRL toured Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 2, and the USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. HSC-2, the "Fleet Angels", operate the Sikorsky MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter and trains pilots and aircrewmen to employ the MH-60S worldwide in a variety of missions, including fleet logistics support, search and rescue, medical evacuation, special warfare support, anti-surface warfare and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief. The USS Bainbridge is an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer and has gone on numerous deployments. From August 2007 to February 2008 she served in the role of the flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1, participating in numerous activities and port visits over the course of the deployment. The ship gained greater renown for her role in the Maersk Alabama hostage rescue in 2009, when she successfully facilitated the rescue of the ship’s captain with the assistance of an embarked SEAL team. NRLs group was hosted by fleet representatives that explained the operations of the command, described various systems and equipment, and discussed the complexities of doing fleet experimentation in support of new research programs. #InternImpacts 💥 Josh Wager, a U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) intern and Old Dominion University junior, is making waves in the world of physics! He's currently characterizing lasers for atomic physics experiments at NRL. Josh is measuring the lasing threshold, output power, and frequency spectrum of these lasers. He's also planning to stabilize the laser frequencies using modulation transfer spectroscopy in an atomic vapor cell. Science Engineering Apprenticeship Program interns took part in an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Maneuvering and Seakeeping Basin and the David Taylor Model Basin at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md., Aug. 1, 2024. The tour featured a ride on a carriage in the DTMB’s high-speed section, where interns observed a towed model at various speeds and learned how engineers test ship performance in different conditions. Additionally, the interns explored the MASK facility, walking behind the wave-generating paddles to witness the inner workings of the Navy’s indoor ocean testing technology. #carderock Carderock is a leading Navy research and development facility in West Bethesda, specializing in the testing and evaluation of next-generation surface and underwater vessels. We’re excited to celebrate the outstanding South Carolina students recognized in the 2024 ArcGIS Online School Competition! This achievement was made possible through the strong partnership between our #NIWCAtlantic STEM Outreach team and the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness (SC Competes). Together, we’re inspiring the next generation of tech leaders by empowering them to solve real-world challenges through geographic analysis. The ArcGIS event is a student mapping competition presented by Esri and the National Council for Geographic Education. It challenges students nationwide to showcase their skills in geographic information systems (GIS) using Esri’s ArcGIS online platform. NIWC Atlantic’s STEM Outreach Program began hosting the ArcGIS competition in 2020, when volunteers stepped up to serve as the state team. SC Competes came aboard in 2022 to provide additional administrative and marketing support, including outreach to schools statewide. Special kudos to the state winner Baxter Bailey for his exemplary project on "Visualizing South Carolina's Ranking." Congratulations to all of the winners! I'm thrilled to announce that I’ve been awarded the prestigious SMART Scholarship, which will allow me to further my education and career with a position at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard after I graduate! 🚢 The SMART (Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation) Scholarship is a program funded by the Department of Defense, designed to support students in STEM fields.
