Learned a great deal from John Yeager at his workshop focused on courage in Providence at the Association of Leadership Programs conference. He talked about being courage keepers and courage seekers. We all have the potential to serve as courage keepers for others, as they people someone turns to in a moment of fear, who helps that individual regain their own courage. And we all have individuals from whom we seek courage as our confidence wanes. Our understanding of the fear in those moments, and what’s causing that fear is key to building our ability to regularly act with courage. The more often we act courageously, the more it will be built into the automatic, system 1 thinking. What a great reminder that acting courageously becomes easier, more systematic, and more natural the more you do it. I recalled conversations during the course of our Leadership Cincinnati sessions where individuals served as a courage keepers for me (Ryan Dunlap Paaras Parker Whitney Eckert Lisa Roberts-Rosser Justin Brookhart Curtis Hollis Becky Blank Kelly Bonnell, LaNae Barnes Bill Baker John P. Scott, MPA Tianay Amat, Jonathan Brown Ed.D, D.D, karen forgus Kate Schroder). I’m lucky to be surrounded by empathetic and compassionate, top notch leaders. We all need those courage keepers in our lives to allow us to face down our fears. As always, John showed off a master class in facilitation, delivering tons of information, connecting dozens of distinct topics to his one larger point, creating great chatter within the group, and ending the workshop at the tip of the crescendo. John serves as a great role model, and his work serves as its own version of a courage keeper, encouraging me to strive to be better and be courageous in the most difficult moments. Thanks, John! Cincy Next is a program for emerging leaders with fewer than 8 years of professional experience to strengthen leadership skills, expand networks, and increase knowledge of self, business, and community. Applications for C-Change Class 20 are now open! C-Change is a 10-month leadership development program for advancing mid-career leaders in the Cincinnati region. The curriculum combines leadership development with community engagement opportunities, increasing participants’ capabilities for current and future leadership roles.
