Urban Alliance Chicago connects students attending Chicago Public Schools to career pathways through paid work experience, mentorship, and professional development. The signature high school internship program targets students in 12th grade who receive a year-long experience featuring professional development training, paid internships, and one-on-one support following six weeks of pre-employment job skills training. Paid interns work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer, and each intern is assigned a dedicated Urban Alliance program coordinator, as well as a one-on-one workplace mentor, who provide support to guide the intern's professional development and post-high school planning. UA Chicago also offers professional development workshops to schools and nonprofit organizations focused on critical skills training to expand its reach among Chicago youth. In 2017, UA Chicago partnered with The Obama Foundation to launch the Obama Youth Job Corps (OYJC) to increase access to economic opportunity for high school students in Chicago’s South Side communities. Since the launch of OYJC, Urban Alliance Chicago has provided more than 1,700 10th and 11th graders from Chicago Public Schools with job skills training and an additional 650 12th graders with intensive workforce readiness training, and paid internships. Through workforce readiness training and early, meaningful work experience at businesses throughout the city, OYJC students get the skills, experience, and exposure to succeed.
