Coroner IDs victim of fireworks accident in Summerville neighborhood

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified a man who died in a fireworks accident.

Allen Ray McGrew, 41, died after igniting a “large firework device” and setting in on top of his head. The coroner says the firework exploded on top of his head and caused extreme head injuries.

A report from the Sheriff’s Office states the victim had been attending a neighborhood block party at the time of the incident. Details also confirm that bystanders attempted to stop the incident.

Deputies say they responded just after 10:20 p.m. Thursday to the 100 block of Cottonwood Drive in the Crestwood Subdivision in Summerville.

Upon arrival, deputies and EMS located a man lying on the road suffering from major injuries. He was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

Witnesses told investigators that the injuries were a result of a fireworks accident.

Detectives are conducting an ongoing investigation into this incident.
