Grit and Grace: Over 150 Years of Jewish Life in the Lower East Side

Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")

The Community Scholar Program will present a discussion on the history of the Lower East Side, from the arrival of Portuguese Jews in 1654 to its transformation into a densely populated hub of Eastern European Jewish immigrants 250 years later. The program will explore what drew these immigrants to the area, how they lived, the culture they created, and the ways they sought relief from the challenges of life in this crowded part of New York City.
