Stranger Things has always been a treasure trove of pop culture linchpins for superfans, as the series is a time capsule of the ’80s in and of itself.
But for Season 4, the production team behind Stranger Things dialed the Easter egg hunt up to Eleven. Below, we’ve gathered 18 fun facts about this supersized season that are more metal than Eddie Munson’s (Joe Quinn) rings.
1. At the end of Season 3, the hair team intentionally gave Eleven the same green scrunchie that Max wore earlier in the season, as a small parting gift from her friend.
2. The costume team makes all of the scrunchies on the show so that they match the rest of the costuming exactly.
3. Both the overall Hellfire Club storyline and especially the character Eddie Munson were inspired by the documentary series Paradise Lost. Eddie is loosely modeled after writer and artist Damien Echols, who was a member of the West Memphis Three.
4. The diorama Eleven makes for her class presentation in Episode 1 is made out of a Reebok shoebox — a fun little nod to Joyce (Winona Ryder) always wearing that brand of sneakers. The props team imagined Eleven would have just used one of Joyce’s old shoeboxes for her school project.
5. Each key setting this season has a core color palette. California is brighter, lighter and sun bleached, leaning on pastels. The Hawkins colors are richer and more saturated, while the Russian tones are much darker and colder.
6. Eleven wears a ring this season, which is meant to be a little gift from Mike (Finn Wolfhard) that he would have given her at some point.
7. If you look closely at Robin (Maya Hawke)’s nails during the pep rally scene, you’ll see she has Hawkins green fingernails, with a paw print on her middle finger.
8. This season, Mike is trying to grow his hair out like Eddie, his new role model, so it’s a little longer in the back with short layers.
9. Argyle’s Surfer Boy Pizza van is a VW. Eduardo Franco learned how to drive stick shift specifically for his role as Argyle.
10. When Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) plays on the Hawkins basketball team, he wears a number eight jersey, which is a nod to Kobe Bryant’s first jersey number. McLaughlin is a huge fan of Bryant and had the idea to pay tribute to the late sports icon through his character’s jersey.
11. Lucas’ new flattop haircut signifies his transition into a more popular jock, and it was inspired by the hip-hop duo Kid ’n Play.
12. For the new California setting, the Duffer brothers were heavily influenced by Spielberg’s 1982 film, E.T.
13. Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono)’s new blonde wig this season is based on Kate Capshaw’s hair as Willie Scott in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
14. Chrissy (Grace Van Dien)’s hair design was inspired by Olivia Newton-John’s character, Sandy, in Grease — very American good girl, classic cheerleader — but with super ’80s bangs.
15. Jason (Mason Dye)’s hair design was based on Tom Cruise’s look in Risky Business.
16. The design for Pennhurst was influenced by the films The Silence of the Lambs, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Shutter Island.
17. The real-life Creel House location is in Rome, Georgia, just a few miles from Berry College. The creative team was looking for a uniquely “frightening” house with a distinct presence, vertical architecture and a third-level attic. When production designer Chris Trujillo first saw the house, it reminded him of Norman Bates’ house in Psycho.
18. The monster Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) was heavily influenced by Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street films, as well as Pinhead from the Hellraiser series.
