The Mountain

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Mountain finds its provocative director further honing his craft -- but formal flair and an engrossing Jeff Goldblum performance may not be enough to sway the unconverted.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader One can easily watch the film the way Andy takes part in Wallace's odyssey-but you'll probably be disappointed if you expect the various ideas to add up to more than the sum of their parts. Rated: 2/4 Oct 1, 2019 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle There's a chill about "The Mountain" that's conveyed in visual terms. And then it all, slowly and then completely, falls apart. Rated: 1/4 Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle The Mountain has productive veins of ore for those willing to mine it. But be aware that finding gems will require sweat equity. Rated: 3/5 Aug 1, 2019 Full Review Dan Schindel Hyperallergic The Mountain is uniquely brutal. It offers little entertainment for many viewers, but for anyone who can recognize this kind of melancholy, it might be a dark catharsis. Feb 27, 2020 Full Review Zhuo-Ning Su Awards Daily Think the meticulously manipulated, taxidermically inspired compositions of Roy Andersson with his Scandinavian humor substituted by David Lynch's brand of dread, and you get a pretty good idea what it's like to be sucked into The Mountain. Oct 23, 2019 Full Review Andrea Thompson A Reel of One's Own [The Mountain] doesn't allow its characters to make much of an impression. Rated: D Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

jelisije j 3 stars because I can't give a grade to a film that settled what it wanted to be which was showing one of the most depressing, disgusting medical practices of all time. LOBOTOMY IS NOT A SUBJECT TO BE ENTERTAINED BY. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I actually thought this was quite well done. Not a lot of dialogue but the setting, details and cinematography were splendid. I think both of the main actors also provided an interesting opposing dynamic in regards to the primary subject matter. It was an accurate peek into a time that only people in their 70s or older can remember. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/20 Full Review Audience Member It was depressing, then got worse. It had not one redeeming quality, and I am shocked that Jeff Goldblume participated. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Scary slow look into lobotomies..feel like it tries to hard to be artistic. The story of the doctor and young man get lost in the scenes that drag on forever. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review andrei d Are juma de idee si niste Goldblum si nu face nimic cu ele Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The film is an incredible piece. It is, on the surface about a young man who's recently lost his father who goes onto follow a famous lobotomist who had treated his late mother by working as the lobotomoist's photographer. This film is a walk through hell and it is beautiful. I'd say this film isn't for everyone, but I hate that because I believe this film should be for everyone. I really like, admire, and respect films like this one. It is slow moving and existential and it completely and totally builds the atmosphere of desperation. It certainly speaks on the banality of evil and all of our places in it, how we walk alongside next to evil and moral corruption. The performances are great, Ty Sheridan really shows his talent here. Jeff Goldblum ads an importance to the film. The end does get a little winding, it could perhaps have been edited a bit better in the last 1/4 of the film. There's two long monologues by an older actor that take the film to some other places than where it was before. This is similar to films by Michael Haneke and other European existential filmmakers. If you're into that, this film is certainly for you. It has very touching moments (Like Sheridan's character having a brief physical connection with a patient in her hospital room earlier in the film. It is a brief moment but is touchs your heart so). The film also excels in portraying very alienating moments. It's truly a special piece and it should be seen but you do need to know what kind of film you will see. It is abstract and it holds no prisoners but it is a hugely important piece. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
