    Eddie brings Rose a rose after getting her out of bed. Rose accuses him of thinking she's ugly. She tells him that the girl Marcy who supposedly won first prize at a dance competition was actually hired by Eddie's friend Rolan, not found by him. Eddie admits Rolan is a moron and cheat. Rose asks if she won anything, and Eddie says she was disqualified for being too pretty. They argue about the competition and other girls' feelings. Eddie insists he thinks Rose is different and wants to take her to dinner to make up for it, promising it won't involve his dogfighting. Rose agrees as long as he never mentions the dogfight again and it's a regular date.

    ROSE Im down here Eddie. You got me out of bed, what do you want?

    EDDIE (hands rose) A rose for a rose. (beat) I thought youd like it. ROSE Thats all youve got to say? I just want you to know one thing. Its the only reason I came out here. Youre the ugly one, not me. (beat) You know that girl Marcy? She said she won first prize. Your friend Rolan didnt find her, he hired her. EDDIE Aw, come on. ROSE He hired her. I heard them fighting. He was trying to weasel her out of her share. Hes not only a moron and a cheat. Hes a cheapskate. EDDIE No shit. (beat) ROSE Did I win anything? EDDIE No. In fact you were disqualified. Too pretty. ROSE What about all those other girls? What about their feelings? Dont they have feelings? EDDIE They didnt know nothing about it. Besides youre different. I mean how many

    jarheads were in that shithole? How many tried to talk their girl out of going and before dancing too? Because when you dance thats final judgment. ROSE What? Are you saying I should take that as a compliment? EDDIE Yeah. ROSE A compliment is when you say something nice about someone, not whenEDDIE Im telling you its a compliment. ROSE Theres no such person as Jim Swayne. He doesnt even exist. You dont know anything about music. You dont know who Pete Seeger is or even Woody Guthrie. You dont even know how to apologize. You think you know everything, but you dont. Goodnight Eddie. EDDIE Now hold it, Rose, please. Look I know youre sore, I feel rotten about it. Let me make it up to you. You gotta believe me. Im sorry. I wanna take you to dinner. ROSE Is that your idea of a joke? EDDIE No, I mean it. I dont care what you look like. ROSE I wish you did. EDDIE Theres lots of shit I dont know Rose. I dont know what the hell Im doing yapping at you like a god damn idiot. I dont know whats the right thing to say. But I want to be here with you Rose. I know that. I justcant help it. (beat)

    If you want me to leave now just tell me to leave and Im gone. Im fucking out of here. ROSE Youre gonna stop swearing. EDDIE Okay. ROSE Okay. EDDIE Okaywhat? ROSE Okay. Lets go to dinner. But if this is some part of your stupid dogfight, I swear Ill kill you. EDDIE No, I promise. Just you and me at a nice joint having a nice meal. ROSE And never mention the dogfight again. EDDIE Roger that. ROSE And itll be just like going on a regular date, right? EDDIE Just two regular people on a regular date. ROSE Right. EDDIE Good.
