Dear first graders and families:

We have been busy studying inventors since December. You have studied
historical figures and even discovered how kids just like you can create
something new and special (like earmuffs!). This learning process is driven by
our fourth IB Unit How We Express Ourselves. The central idea of our IB unit is:
Innovators create to address challenges and opportunities.

For the conclusion of this unit, each student will become an inventor!
(These inventions are just prototypes we are celebrating ideas. They do not
have to actually work.) Here are some examples we have learned about in
class:
Caines Arcade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U
The Kid Presidents Cat Friendly Vacuum Cleaner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75okexRzWMk

PART 1:
By now, you have already:
- Identified a challenge in your daily life or the world around you.
- Brainstormed ways to solve the problem.
- Developed an invention to solve the problem or create
opportunities for people to do new or better things.
Your Invention Plan is going home today with this letter.

PART 2:
Next, you will:
- Use the Invention Plan to gather materials and put together your invention at home.
- Try it out! Do you need to make any changes or improvements?
- Bring your invention to school.

PART 3:
Back at school, you will create a presentation to show the
importance of your invention. You may choose how to share your
invention with the class (poster, brochure, video, etc.) We will work on
this February 2-3 and February 6. The presentation should explain:
- The need or challenge in your world.
- The invention you came up with to solve the problem.
- How your invention changes the lives of other people.
- Who will use your invention.

Remember A really good invention makes the world more awesome. Because the world is
full of problems. Theres also lots of problem solvers! The Kid President

Good luck! We cant wait to see all of our problem solvers in action!

- The First Grade Team
