    starting your business with.

    1. Top Level Categories  
    Top level categories are an important part of the selection process, because the BSR of 
    a product is tied to the top level categories, but ​not ​to the sub-categories. Keep in mind, 
    not all top level categories are created equal​—we want to focus only on the ones that 
    are profitable!  
     
    Download the complete list of profitable categories attached to this lesson. We strongly 
    recommend that you only use these categories for your product searches.

    2. Categories Requiring Approval  
    Some of our recommended categories are “gated categories,” meaning that they require 
    approval from Amazon. Getting this approval is a difficult and lengthy process. You will 
    need to have ​supplier invoices for most of them.

    Then, click “View requirements” next to each category that you are interested in selling 
    in. Amazon will take you to a page that looks like this:  
     

     
     
    Read through the requirements carefully to decide whether or not this is a category that 
    you want to pursue. Remember, there are many recommended categories that are not 
    gated, and will not require you to take additional steps.

    3. Want to Sell in a Gated Category?  
    Take the following steps if you want to sell in a gated category:  
     
    1. Make sure to get approval from Amazon BEFORE you start selling.  
    2. Have at LEAST 3 commercial invoices for each category.  
    3. Consider using an ungating service (google “Amazon ungating service” to find a 
    list of companies who can do it for you). ​Note: ​These services range in price 
    from $150 to upwards of $300.  

    4. Still An Enormous Opportunity  
    Don’t let the idea of gated categories deter you—there are a huge number of profitable 
    product opportunities in the ungated categories. So, if you do not get approved to sell in 
    a gated category, find a product in one of the ungated categories. Once you have 
    product sales and a track record of selling on Amazon, you will find it easier to get 
    approval to sell in the gated categories.  
     
    Now, take a look at the categories list, and mark down which ones appeal most to you.
