TEXT: Five Brothers, One Mother by Exie Abola

QUESTIONS:
a) How does Abola's essay dramatize the saying, "Home is where the heart is"?

Abola's essay dramatizes the saying "Home is where the heart is" by deliberately
showcasing the values of Filipino households such as strong family ties, hospitality among
guests, as well as being family-oriented. Home is where we can be ourselves without
thinking about other people judging us. It is where we learn, grow, and find comfort
whenever we feel down or come across difficulties in life. A place where we can spend time
with the people we care about, and a place where we can go back to anytime we want, and it
will still welcome us with open arms, which was depicted in this text as the Marikina House.
It may be an unfinished house but they still kept on coming back to because it is their home,
and at their home is their mother patiently waiting for their every visit and willingly serves
her kids because it is something that truly makes her happy.

b) How does the advent of social media like facebook and twitter affect our
concept of being "at home"?

The advent of social media such as Facebook and twitter affects our concept of being
"at home" because it is something that gets in the way of time that is supposed to be spent
bonding and talking with loved ones. People nowadays are often on their phones, forgetting
about the world and the people around them that truly matter. It may not be that noticeable
now, but the people around you, including yourself, are growing older and weaker as time
passes by. Before you know it, you'll be regretting the times that you could've spent more
time with them but didn't. And that is something that we should avoid early on in life
because we shouldn't have to live a regretful life. After all, we all know that we shouldn't
prioritize our technology and social media platforms over our loved ones because they are
special and irreplaceable in our lives.

1. gambling in funeral wakes

2. There should always be someone awake and guarding the dead, because it is believed

that ghosts will take the dead.

3. Not sweeping while a funeral wake is ongoing, it is believed to cause headlice.
4. when moving the casket, whenever it suddenly doesn't fit doorways, it is believed that
the dead isn't ready to leave yet or is still waiting for someone.
5. beheading a chicken, so that other members of the family does not die after him

immediately.
6. holy mass for the deceased

b) What did the voicetape have to do with the events in the story? Is it an
important part of the story? Why or Why not?

The voice tape is a vital part of the story, it is what triggered the events in the text
to happen. It is the reason that drove Dante's uncle, Ato to get hit by the bus and the reason
why he acted strange, days before the incident. I believe that it is an important part of the
story because the story focuses on the events that happened before, during, and after the
death of Ato. The story narrated how it lead to the accident, how it happened, as well as the
effect to the family, which were all solely caused by the said voice tape from his uncle's
spouse labeled as 4 my one & onli lab ATO.
