Empty Space

“The wasteland grows. Woe to him with harbors the wasteland. Our earth is not on earth of
calculation. If this remains such, only God can save us.”
There is a beautiful quote from Pope Francis that says, ‘The wilderness outside us is growing
because the wilderness within us have grown vast.’ It took me some time to digest the words of
the Pope. Then it dawned on me how true his words were. However, his views were very
positive compared to the quotation stated above. But I guess there is some truth lying between
the words wasteland and wilderness.
After 9 months of uncertain beginnings of life inside our mother’s womb, we struggle to be alive.
We came out exactly naked, with clinched fists but possessing nothing nor bringing nothing
except a cry for security and perhaps, sufficiency. Then we grew up together with that emptiness
and longing for fullness which has turned a giant over time. Then it leads us towards going to
where our hearts could be filled and that emptiness within us be satisfied. Perhaps, beautiful
things could fill us. But no, for things are passing and beauty, fleeting. Then we thought, maybe
love and emotions could satisfy us. But no for emotions are never constant and love is painful;
and no one loves pain; thus we give up right there the moment we experience its thorns. So then
our search for that which satisfies and fills us lingers and has become an impulse of our actions.
And oftentimes when we are haunted by this feeling, we seem to acquire almost everything and
by everything I mean even the world or at least what’s within it. We take almost everything
leaving behind emptiness in the world. What is left are growing wildernesses and wastelands for
oftentimes we take and leave nothing behind but footprints of our greed and selfishness. The
earth is victim of it. She always has.
We have forgotten that beyond everything we see is that generous God who has created us for
Him and the world around us. Thus because He created us for Him, in Him alone do we find
fullness and satisfaction. He alone can fill that void within. That wilderness. For without Him,
even if we have everything in the world making it a wasteland of nothingness, truly it’s us who
have grown into a garbage dump, more wasted than a wasteland. God alone suffices. He alone
fills that empty space within.
