Do you know that poems are embedded with

devices that make a text more attractive? These
devices are called “Literary Devices”. Read and
discover more of them.

Literary devices refer to the language techniques used by a

writer to convey a clearer and more interesting message from the text.

A Figure of Speech is a literary device that has a separate meaning

from its literal meaning.

Some of the commonly used figures of speech used by a writer are

the following:

Simile
A simile makes a comparison between two unlike things using the words
"like" or "as."

Example:
Jose Rizal is like a star.

Metaphor
A metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things or ideas with NO
“like” or “as”.

Example:
Jose Rizal is a star.

14
MODULE 719

Morning, Puerto del Mar, Isla Guimaras

by John Iremil Teodoro

Always, there is a hidden cove

in my heart
where all year it is summer
and the (1)rain visits
only when I am desolate.
But this morning,
I am truly at the sea,
swimming by myself in waters
(2) whose lines are clean as a poem
perhaps,(3) heaven’s jetway is a shore
with (4)sand as fine and white as the long
dresses of angels.
Perhaps the chorus of their voices
is cool and pure as the lapping tongues
of the smallest waves.
How blissful it would be to take my last
breath
reclining in the arms of the sea,
wrapped in the warm rays
of a just-risen sun.
But I have many more poems
that I must write
Poems of love.
(5)Love like the sea
deep and color-changing,
custodian of such mysteries.

How did you get on with the challenge? Did

you enjoy analyzing the figures of speech
highlighted in the representative text of the region
in Visayas? Prove your knowledge for the last
time as you reflect on the final task.

MODULE 7 19

Seeing the Lighthouse

DIRECTIONS: The writer of the poem, “Padre Faura Witnesses the Execution of
Rizal” used the figure of speech, Personification in comparing a hero to a Star. He is Dr.
Jose P. Rizal. Just like Jose Rizal, you have also good attributes that make up a good
person. Think of the good traits that you have. Compare yourself to a Non-Human
Subject. Use Simile as a figure of speech. Write at least a short sentence that will justify
your comparison.

Example:
1.Jose Rizal is as bright as the star.
2.He is compared to a star because a star gives light to the world while Rizal
opened the eyes of the Filipino people against the Spanish colonizers. With
that, a dark past was changed to a brighter tomorrow.
