Answer the following:

1. A simply supported beam of span 8m has a cross section area 250 x 300 mm. If
the permissible stress is 15 N/mm2, find
a) Maximum UDL it can carry
b) Maximum concentrated load P, applied at the centre of the beam, the beam
can carry safely.
2. Deduce the Bending stress equation
M/I = f/y = E/R
3. Derive the expression for slope and deflection of a cantilever beam with a point
load at its centre.
4. Draw the Bending moment and Shear force diagram for the beam shown in the
figure:

Answer the following:

1. State and derive Bernoulli’s Equation of motion along with the assumptions
considered in it.

2. Two velocity components are given in the following cases, considering the fluid to be
in-compressible find the third component such that they satisfy the continuity
equation:
a) U = x3 + y2 + 2z2 ; V = --x2y – yz – xy ; W = ?
b) U = log ( y2 + z2 ) ; V = log ( x2 + z2) ; W = ?
3. Determine the total pressure on a circular plate of diameter 1.5m which is placed
vertically in water in such a way that the center of the plate is 3m below the free
surface of water. Find the position of center of pressure also?

4. A 30 cm diameter pipe, conveying water branches into two pipes of diameter 20cm
and 15 cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 30 cm diameter pipe is 2.5 m/s,
find the discharge in this pipe. Also determine the velocity in 15 cm pipe if the
average velocity in 20 cm diameter pipe is 2 m/s.

against them?
2. A baseline was measured to be 150m long with a tape at a field temperature of 27°C,
the applied pull being 14 kg. The tape was standardized at a temperature of 15°C with
a pull of 8 kg. if the designated length of the tape is 20m, weight of 1 cm3 of tape =
7.86 g, total weight of tape 0.8 kg, E = 2.109×106 kg/cm2 and coefficient of expansion
of tape per degree Celsius 11.2×10-6, find the true length of the line.
3. Explain the principle of equalizing backsight and foresight distance.
4. The following readings are successively taken with a level: 0.355, 0.485, 0.625,
1.755, 1.895, 2.350, 1.780, 0.345, 0.685, 1.230 and 2.150. the instrument was shifted
after the fourth and seventh readings. Prepare a level book and calculate the RLs of
different points. The RL of the first point is 255.500m.
