Lesson Title: Odyssey Plan Materials: SAS

Learning Targets:
At the end of the module, I will be able to: References:
1. reflect on my plans for the future; Burnett, W., & Evans, D. J. (2018).
2. identify my long-term goals based on what I value, Designing your life: Build a life that works
believe in, and can do; and for you. London: Vintage Books.
3. identify short-term goals and how they connect with
my long-term goals.

A. CONNECT (Duration: 5 mins)

Hello there! How was your first week of school? My first week of school went smoothly.

Have you reflected on your future already? If you have, what plans do you have for yourself in the next five
years? If not, why haven’t you? What makes it difficult for you to make plans?

- There is not a single day where I don’t think or reflect about my future. In the next five years, I plan
to survive nursing school, graduate college, take and pass the board exam, go abroad, and be a
successful RN.

An Odyssey Plan is a graphic representation of three possible alternative lives you might live over the
next five years.

Alternative Life Plan 1 Alternative Life Plan 2 Alternative Life Plan 3

● Life One—That Thing ● Life Two—That Thing ● Life Three—That Thing

Instructions: Imagine yourself having the chance to plan three different versions of your
life/career/relationship that will unfold over the next five years. Think of these three alternatives:

● Life Plan 1: What do the next five years look like for you at this point in time? - Many
people around the world consider their college graduation day as a milestone, and rightfully so.
It is, after all, a consolidation of decades of hard work and sacrifice. To an extent, I thought of it
as the beginning of the realization of my goals. At this point in time, I see myself walking down
the stage as my name is called, wearing my toga and graduation cap, and receiving my college
diploma, the proof of all the years of my hard work. I can see myself being thrilled, ecstatic and
pleased in the next five years as I graduate with a BSN degree. That I am technically fully
eligible to class myself as a nurse and that I’ve achieved a life-long ambition which is basically a
dream come true.

● Life Plan 2: What do the next five years look like if one thing in your life is suddenly gone? -
Losing my dreams and passion in doing what I love is the one thing in my life that I would be
scared to lose of in the next five years. My passion and dreams become a part of who I am.
They become etched into my being, my identity, and my sense of self. So once that passion
fades, a moment of panic may set in. As time passes, I can see myself feeling lost, having
anxiety or deep depression at the thought of no longer doing that thing that once defined me,
becoming frustrated and feeling guilty with myself, wondering what’s wrong with me for not
feeling excited about something that brought me so much joy in past. That what began as a
strong, bright, and hopeful fire is now a much smaller flame.

● Life Plan 3: What do the next five years look like if money or image were not an issue? - As I
searched for the perfect words and pictures to depict a life that I would live if money or image
were not an obstacle or if it were in abundance in my life, I realized I kept coming back to living
simply, living for the day, and living to see more of the world. I would be travelling around the
world learning about various cultures, doing volunteer work, taking up courses from the best of
universities without any concern about financial problems and career opportunities ahead.

With those in mind, start building your alternate life plans.

1. Write a six-word title for each of the life plans that will reflect the theme of your overall plan.
2. Rate your plan’s Resources based on what you have available now to carry out your plan.
3. Rate your plan’s Confidence based on how sure you are of yourself to carry out that plan.
4. Rate your plan’s Coherence based on how your plan matches with your overall outlook in
life.
5. Rate your plan’s Likeability based on how appealing the plan looks to you right now, at this
point of your life.
6. Then, write three questions you have about the plan.

2. How will your short-term goals affect your long-term goals?

- Short-term goals are often necessary to achieve long-term goals and career path objectives.
Setting goals that I can achieve now or in the near future may help me accomplish more complex
goals later on in my career. When setting and achieving short-term goals, it is helpful to consider
the impact they may have on my long-term career goals and tailor my efforts to best prepare for
future objectives. Setting short-term goals is a great way to hold myself accountable for my
success. It helps track my progress and motivate myself to continue advancing in my career.
Each goal I achieve gives me a sense of accomplishment and encourage me to continue
developing my skills. Setting short-term goals early may help determine my interests and
passions in the field I desire. Short-term goals affect my long-term goals by helping me explore
potential career paths to determine which specialties and areas I feel most passionate about
pursuing.

3.Based on what you learned about yourself today, complete the statements below:

I want to
. focus on my career path, be goal-oriented, achieve more things in life, and be a successful RN.

I know I can achieve my dream and meet my goals because I can

do anything I set my mind to and do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
