Entrance exam for the Master of Science program in Molecular and Cellular Biology

of the LMU Munich

Topics

The 90 minutes exam will be given in English. It will consist of multiple-choice (single answer)
questions in the area of “cell biology”, “genetics”, “human biology” and “microbiology”.

The following topics could be covered in the exam (i.e. not all topics will necessarily be covered,
but this list will give you an idea of topics that you could encounter in the exam):

Cell biology
Atoms and molecules
Architecture and components of the pro- and eukaryotic cell
Biochemistry of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids
Cell theory and the origin of life
Cell cycle and cell death
Cell signaling, cell junctions and extracellular matrix
Cytoskeleton
Energy conversion (e. g. mitochondria and chloroplasts)
Intracellular compartments, protein sorting and membrane traffic
Knowledge of methods (microscopy, molecular biology, biochemistry)
Membrane structure
Protein quality control
Transport across membranes

Genetics
DNA, genes and chromosomes
DNA replication, recombination and repair
Gene expression (transcription and translation)
Knowledge of methods (sequencing, cloning, genetic engineering)
Mutations and disease
Regulation of gene expression

Human Biology
Basic human anatomy
Basic human physiology
Basic oncology
Epigenetics
Genetics of complex diseases
Human evolution
Human genomics and next generation sequencing
Mendelian genetics and diseases
Stem cells and cloning

Microbiology
Cultivation, growth, and differentiation
Energetics and catabolism under aerobic and anaerobic conditions
Host-microbe interactions
Motility and taxis, cell division
Phototrophy, chemolithotrophy and methanogenesis
Phylogeny of prokaryotes
Specifics of prokaryotic physiology (nucleoid, processes at the cytoplasmic membrane, cell wall
biosynthesis, antibiotics)

Books

The exam questions will be at a bachelor’s level, so any of the textbooks that you used during your
bachelor’s studies can help you in preparing for the exam, for example:

Alberts, Molecular Biology of the Cell (6th edition)

Hillis, Life, The Science of Biology (12th edition)
Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry (7th or 8th edition)
Lodish, Molecular Cell Biology (8th or 9th edition)
Slonczewski/Foster, Microbiology (5th edition)
Stryer, Biochemistry (9th edition)
Madigan/Martinko, Brock, Microbiology (14th or 15th edition)
Watson, Molecular Biology of the Gene (7th edition)

Please note that we unfortunately cannot provide you with sample questions.
