education, four years Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS] ) to provide

As a crucial component of the Senior High School Curriculum, DepEd's Student Immersion
Program offers students professional learning opportunities tied to the workplace that will help them
develop crucial knowledge, abilities, and attitudes in their chosen fields. It will give the student a chance
to grow professionally under supervision while also giving the business a chance to assess their
The Work Immersion Program for senior high school students has been running since 2017 with
support from The Asia Foundation's Coalitions for Change (CFC), working with national and local
government organizations, private and public enterprises, and nongovernmental organizations. It is run by
the Philippine Government's Department of Education (DepEd). The Program is made available to Grade
11 and 12 students in DepEd public schools, private schools, state colleges and universities, and
technical-vocational institutions, aged 15 to 18, as a requirement for graduation. To give students more
opportunities to apply their knowledge, DepEd has made it a requirement for them to obtain hands-on
experience through work simulation of their selected track as part of the curriculum. This is due to the
lack of knowledge, skills, and work experience that puts students at a disadvantage.
DepEd describes Work Immersion as one of the course requirements for graduation. A
Senior High School student has to undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly relates to
the student’s postsecondary goal. Through Work Immersion, the students are exposed to and
become familiar with work-related environment related to their field of specialization to enhance
their competence. Specifically, the students can: (i) gain relevant and practical industrial skills
under the guidance of industry experts and workers; (ii) appreciate the importance and
application of the principles and theories taught in school; (iii) enhance their technical
knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich their skills in social, communications and human relations; and
(v) develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. These prepare them
to meet the needs and challenges of employment or higher education after graduation. (DepEd,
April 2017).
Basically, Social skills are the tools we use to communicate, interact, and build healthy
relationships. Furthermore, social skills are interdependent with emotional skills, and together,
they create social-emotional skills. Also, social-emotional learning skills both influence and
build on one another. Children must develop social and emotional skills if they are to adapt to
and feel at ease in social circumstances. They grow to sense sensations of companionship, pride,
laughter, and confidence. Excellent social abilities make it simpler to get along with people and
grow more autonomous. With great social skills, friendships and peer interactions are more
rewarding and lasting. Numerous studies confirm the benefits of early social-emotional skill
development in the long run. They become more capable of handling stress and enduring
difficult circumstances as they mature. However, short-term gains are significant too. It goes
beyond simply adhering to societal norms and acting appropriately. It is primarily about
relationships. Childhood friendships are beneficial to mental health and allow kids to exercise
According to Elliott, Frey, and Davies (2015), social skills are important, especially in
the educational lives of children and teens. According to Caprara, Barbaranelli, Pastorelli,
Bandura, and Zimbardo (2000), social skills are important because they help people form
mutually beneficial relationships, which in turn promote academic success and healthy emotional
development. Large percentages of high school students participate in risky behaviors that
endanger their futures, according to the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Additionally, a lot of
students struggle with social and emotional abilities, which affects their academic achievement
and interferes with their classmates' educational experiences (Benson, 2006). Students with weak
social and emotional skills are more likely to struggle academically, engage in risky behaviors
including antisocial behavior, substance misuse, violence, and crime, and drop out of school
Some Senior High School students are afraid to take Work Immersion, since they would
be forced out of their comfort zones and exposed to the true meaning of life, students feared this
kind of program being implemented by the Department of Education. On the one hand, for them
to develop our talents and social skills, it would be the greatest honor, opportunity, and use of
their time. This procedure will be carried out through practical instruction and exposure. They
will learn the true meaning of life in our current society through this kind of interaction.
However, given that they still must take it during their on-the-job training in college before they
graduate, many people may argue that it appeared too early for work immersion.
