a. Arguably the first private aircraft that you have seen is the
Cessna 172. Over 50% of the world's pilots started their training
in the Cessna 172. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-
engine piston aircraft with a high fixed wing made by the Cessna
Aircraft Company (now known as the Textron Aviation
Company). First flown in 1955, more Cessna 172s have been built
than any other aircraft in the world. The Cessna 172 was used in
most pilot training facilities across the United States for decades
and was the flight instructor aircraft of choice.
The Skyhawk 172 appeared in November 1955 as the 1956 model
and remained in production until replaced by the Skyhawk 172A in
early 1960. The first production aircraft was equipped with a
Continental O-300 145 hp (108 kW) six-cylinder, air-cooled
engine and had a maximum gross weight of 2,200 lb (998 kg).
More recent models have been fitted with the Lycoming IO-360-
L2A engine 180hp. The introductory base price of the Cessna 172
was US$8,995, and a total of 4,195 were constructed over the
five years. Since that time, several variants developed (172 -
172S), all with high wings, and as of 2020, Cessna and its
partners had built more than 44,000 aircraft.

b. No reconnaissance aircraft in history has operated globally in more
hostile airspace or with such complete impunity than the SR-71, the
world's fastest jet-propelled aircraft. The Blackbird's performance and
operational achievements placed it at the pinnacle of aviation
technology developments during the Cold War. This Blackbird accrued
about 2,800 hours of flight time during 24 years of active service with
the U.S. Air Force. On its last flight, March 6, 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yielding
and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida set a speed record by flying from Los Angeles
to Washington, D.C., in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds, averaging
3,418 kilometers (2,124 miles) per hour. At the flight's conclusion, they
landed at Washington-Dulles International Airport and turned the
airplane over to the Smithsonian.

Lift is in equilibrium to weight, while thrust is in
equilibrium with drag. The lift force acts at right
angles to the direction of motion of the aircraft,
while weight acts at the center of gravity of the
aircraft.
