The 1990s proved to be a decade of reflection as the Millennium year drew closer.

As a result, movies proved to be largely reflective in their nature – be it finding a loved one, digging back to classic time periods, or even picturing fantasy futures where your entire life is documented for TV.

It also brought about films that have been voted some of the greatest of all time, with huge epics becoming more common.

We here at Sky know that sometimes you want to dig to an old classic or a firm favourite from your childhood – and as a result we’ve collated the biggest and best the 90s had to offer.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Kevin Costner stars as Robin Hood, an English nobleman who becomes known as the Prince of Thieves for robbing from the rich to give to the poor. After breaking out of prison in Jerusalem, Robin is devastated to discover the Sheriff of Nottingham has killed his family, and he sets out to get justice for the murders and save the kingdom from the villainous tyrant, with the help of outlaws Little John and Will Scarlett.

The all-star cast includes Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman and Christian Slater among others.

Goodfellas (1991)

Henry Hill has grown up in poverty but finds his ticket out by becoming one of the mobsters he has long-idolised. However, as he makes his way up the ranks, he finds himself falling further down a dark path that threatens to unravel him completely.

Soon he has to figure out if his life of money and power is truly worth the cost.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

In this cult classic, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn star as two warring women who are in love with the same man, Ernest (Bruce Willis).

When Helen is ditched by Ernest for Madeline, she goes crazy and ends up in a psychiatric hospital – only to return years later looking younger than ever. Her secret? A magic potion that maintains her youth forever.

When Helen drinks the potion too, she discovers she’s now immortal – no matter how many times the pair try to kill each other off.

Addams Family Values (1993)

In a rare case where the sequel outdoes the original, Addams Family Values sees the creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky find their happy gothic world upended by the arrival of a new baby.

When they decide to hire a nanny, they bring in pastel-loving Debbie (Joan Cusack), who quickly takes a liking to Uncle Fester.

However, she has a dark ulterior motive that soon rears its head, but she didn’t count on the family being as weird as they are.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Sam Baldwin, heartbroken by the death of his wife, moves to Seattle with his son, Jonah, in order to start a new life.

One day, Jonah calls up a radio station to help his dad find a new love, and Annie Reed, a Baltimore reporter, hears the conversation. Swept up in the romantic notion despite being engaged, Annie soon finds herself communicating to the man known as ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, leading to a life-changing meeting at New York’s Empire State Building.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan both star in this rom-com classic.

Clerks (1994)

The first film by Kevin Smith, Clerks is centred around disgruntled slacker Dante, a New Jersey slacker who spends his days with best friend Randall working at the convenience store and the video store next door.

After agreeing one day to come into work on his day off, Dante finds himself having a game-changing day – all while dealing with the utterly bizarre customers who seem intent on annoying him.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

In this slapstick classic, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels star as Harry and Lloyd, two feckless but lovable best friends who find themselves in caught in a web of criminal activity when they find a suitcase full of money left behind in Harry’s car by Mary Swanson.

Wanting to return the cash, the duo end up on a road trip to Aspen, Colorado, to give it back to her (and to reunite Lloyd with Mary, who he’s fallen for).

However, in doing so they find themselves being tailed by both police and a group of assassins, as it’s all connected to a kidnapping.

Bad Boys (1995)

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star as Miami detectives Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett, who find themselves in trouble when $100million of heroin is stolen from the station.

Suspecting it was one of their own who did it, they are tasked by Internal Affairs to find the loot in five days – or the entire narcotics division is shut down.

Things soon get complicated when they have to win over a sex worker who is a key witness in their investigation.

Jumanji (1995)

Robin Williams stars in this family adventure film about a board game that comes to life. Brother and sister Peter and Judy, newly orphaned after the death of their parents in a skiing accident, move into an old mansion with their aunt – and get more than they bargained for when they discover a dusty old board game in the attic.

Deciding to play the game to pass time, they get sucked into the jungle world that lies within, finding Alan Parrish (Williams) along the way, who has been trapped there for decades. Now they have to win the game in order to escape.

Matilda (1996)

Another childhood classic, Matilda follows a spectacularly bright young girl as she navigates life under the care of her cruel, hustling parents and evil headteacher, Ms Trunchbull – who just so happens to hate kids.

With the help of kind-hearted school teacher Miss Honey, as well as her friends, Matilda soon discovers she has extra-special abilities – and can use them to fight back.

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Tom Cruise stars as a shamed sports agent who, during a crisis of conscience, exposes the illegal practices of his firm, which promptly gets him fired.

Deciding to start his own business, he only has one client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), and one co-worker in single mother Dorothy Boyd (Reneé Zellweger). Together, they try to create a success of the company.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Bowling fanatic Jeff Lebowski, aka ‘The Dude’, finds himself falling victim to a case of mistaken identity when he’s beaten up and his beloved rug is peed on. Upon learning the intended target was a millionaire also named Jeff Lebowski, The Dude goes on a mission to get compensation for his rug, and instead finds himself getting a job he can’t refuse – deliver a ransom to get back Lebowski’s wife. However, The Dude’s plan goes awry when his friend comes up with a plan to take the money for himself.

Sam Elliott, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman and David Thewlis are among the all-star cast for this classic.

Meet Joe Black (1998)

Millionaire publication tycoon Bill Parrish, gets more than he bargained for ahead of his 65th birthday when he’s visited by Death.

Taking the form of Joe Black, a young man who recently died (and looks suspiciously like a young Brad Pitt), the pair strike up a deal – “Joe” gets to learn what it’s like to be human, in exchange for Bill to get a few more days on Earth before he’s shuffled off this mortal coil.

What they don’t count on is death falling in love… with Bill’s daughter, Susan.

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas (1998)

Journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr Gonzo go on a road trip through the desert to Las Vegas to cover the Mint400 motorcycle race – all while making their way through a suitcase full of a multitude of drugs.

As work takes a backseat, the duo go on a hedonistic adventure sampling any drug they can, leaving chaos in their wake as they do so.

The Mummy (1999)

The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell, an adventurer and explorer who travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and her brother, Jonathan.

While hunting for treasure, they get more than they bargained for when they accidentally awaken Imhotep. Imhotep was a once-revered high priest who was tortured, cursed and buried alive after having an affair with Anak-su-namun, who was betrothed to the Pharaoh whom he later murdered. Alive once again, Imhotep plans to resurrect his beloved – or destroy the world trying.
