How we test small particle removal

Based on the rate at which the air purifier removed small particles from the air in our test.

How we test medium particle removal

Based on the rate at which the air purifier removed medium-sized particles from the air in our test.

Based on the rate at which the air purifier removed large particles from the air in our test.

How we test voc removal

This gas separation test gives an indication of how well the air purifier can remove odours and gas pollutants from the air. We use a gas created from a mix of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

How we test aged filter performance

We simulate the ageing of the air purifier’s filters by exposing them to the smoke from 100 cigarettes. We then repeat the air purification tests using small, medium and large particles.

How we test quietness

We test air purifiers on their highest and lowest settings, so we can tell you which ones are most likely to annoy you. We don't just measure volume of noise: our expert panel also listens out to see if any make irritating sounds.

How we test ease of use

We test how easy each machine is to set manually, via the remote and using a smart phone, if this feature is available. We also check how easy it is to carry out tasks such as removing and replacing the filters.

How we test energy efficiency

We work out how efficient air purifiers are based on their wattage and their ability to clean the air.
