Welcome to Wikidata, Ugochimobi!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards! --Epìdosis 07:08, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

gratisdata.miraheze.org spam

[edit]

Hi Ugochimobi, gratisdata.miraheze.org looks like a pet project with no relevance to Wikidata. Please stop adding links to it. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 08:49, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill: Hello and I hope you're doing great. Gratisdata is by no chance a "spam" as you called it or whatsoever. I wonder what you mean by "looks like a pet project with no relevance to Wikidata", what do you think that means?
Gratisdata is currently going through a mapping process to Wikidata (see this and this on GitHub). This is in fact, backed up by Wikidata's mission, One of which is allowing more federated linked data, particularly for special domains, rather than Wikidata continuing to absorb, retain, and grow values that aren't always suitable for a general KOS.
Gratisdata is no spam whatsoever, it's an external ontology to Wikidata, and what I'm currently doing is mapping Gratisdata properties to Wikidata properties as suggested by Thad Guiry on GitHub, using the equivalent property (P1628) and the equivalent class (P1709) properties for same properties and same clases respectively.
Thank you. Ugochimobi (talk) 09:31, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill Indeed, as @Ugochimobi stated, Wikidata is a "secondary database" and so linked data is vital to it. This is mentioned on our page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Introduction "A secondary database. Wikidata records not just statements, but also their sources, and connections to other databases. This reflects the diversity of knowledge available and supports the notion of verifiability." And in our Help:Statements page we mention to users again about adding verifiable information (not the case here) as well as a paragraph on exclusion criteria (not the case here), and finally on our Wikidata:Notability page we have had many previous discussions concerning linked data around critera 3 of the notability policy to allow linked data references and the original proposals Property Metadata and Wikidata:Property proposal/Archive/27, which is different than item creation (not the case here) and generally agreed to be allowed if it fulfills a linked data role (more data about this property, considered equivalent, can be found at this other url / this property is similar to another property in another database). Finally, the concern about some "pet project" (and maybe not being notable enough?), is where I would say that many existing cultural heritage projects even allowed to have their own Wikidata Project page are indeed "pet projects" when they start out and begin linking data, until ultimately they become full projects and provide valuable additional linked data about a topic or further provide metadata about our existing Wikidata properties in an external fashion. All extremely useful for Wikidata's mission. -- Thadguidry (talk) 14:48, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

At the moment adding these links adds no value to Wikidata at all, it just makes the database larger. The only thing that benefits from adding the links is the site at gratisdata.miraheze.org so I consider this spam. You have already been blocked on two Wikimeida projects for spamming, that should be a hint that you are on the wrong path. Multichill (talk) 10:25, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Multichill, at least for now. Gratisdata is very small (3249 items right now) and most of them seems to be mostly (only?) a copy of Wikidata, worse there is apparently only one active user... Wikidata can't have links to all "mirors" of Wikidata, there is no usefullness (clearly not for Wikidata and I'm not sure to even see the use for the external wikibase). At the very least, it feels way to soon to use this wikibase on Wikidata, we need to wait for this project to be more mature. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 17:19, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
+1 to VIGNERON: if this 'Gratisdata' project begins to host data that Wikidata or other Wikimedia projects cannot host for technical, notability, or licensing reasons, then there may be merit to linking to it; until such hosting of different data happens, there is no need to add these links. Mahir256 (talk) 16:57, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both of you for stating your opinions. It may be early days indeed for 'Gratisdata'. On closer inspection of the data hosted by them, it does appear rather weak for now. --Thadguidry (talk) 19:50, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting idea :) maybe start by updating the gratisdata project to more descriptively link out to wikidata and note the timestamp when you synchronized each data point. Please don't spam the main projects however -- develop gratisdata for a bit and figure out what new use case it can address. Sj (talk) 21:00, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you started again. All spam links removed now. Please don't try to add any more of these. Multichill (talk) 16:26, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill: sorry about that. Plus, I will also heed to the advice from Sj and VIGNERON, to wait till Gratisdata starts hosting data that Wikidata couldn't host. Thanks! \o/ Ugochimobi (talk) 20:23, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
