- Motivation
Species Files databases are curated taxonomic databases that provide coverage of various insect orders. Wikidata has identifiers for some Species Files databases, e.g. Orthoptera Species File ID (old version) (P6050) for Orthoptera Species File (Q57673331). However, last September all the Species Files databases were frozen, pending a migration to Taxonworks, which is now almost complete. However, the ID numbers in the new Species Files databases are different, so it is not possible just to change the Formatter URL. While it is possible for a bot to update all the >30,000 wikidata items with the new Orthoptera Species File IDs, I think it would be better to create a new Orthoptera Species File identifier and retain the old identifier, which would still link to the archived version of the old Species Files database. There is precedent for new identifiers when databases update, e.g. Fauna Europaea ID (P1895) and Fauna Europaea New ID (P4807).
