    About the Business

Shizen is proud to be a fully vegan sushi bar and izakaya. We combine classic shojin and sushi techniques with local, seasonal ingredients to create healthy and flavorful dishes with a light footprint. Some of our most notable dishes include our nigiri, our specialty rolls, our ramen, and our robata items. We use mountain yam, konjac, soybean curd, and other vegan ingredients to replace conventional proteins throughout our menu.…

    • Q:

      Do they have high chairs?

      A:

I've never seen one nor have I ever seen children there and I used to go frequently. This is an upscale artful sushi restaurant w/an adult clientele. I'd try Cha-ya on Valencia instead.

    • Q:

Do they have tables for greater than 4 people? Thinking about going with 6 people total.

      A:

Yes, they usually make 6 people table by joining 3 tables.

Amazing vegan sushi! Everything was delicious. Our favorite restaurant we tried in the city. Would 100% recommend checking them out.

Amazing food, the sushi had a wonderful depth of flavor and uniqueness. I was nervous to try vegan sushi but it surpassed all my expectations.

I wanted to find a vegan place in SF on my one day there this trip, and didn't care what type of cuisine it was. This was the highest ranked I found, and I am ALWAYS here for vegan sushi places. I had my dog with me so I figured we'd have to do takeout, but we didn't. They so politely let her come in with us and sit at the bar at the window, I was super thankful and she was as always extremely well behaved.
The place is tiny, very wood heavy, very simple decorated and really lovely.

The menu was extensive, overwhelming honestly because I could technically eat everything (only if I could handle spice), and we ordered multiple things to split. My friend and I both got miso soup which is usually not vegan, a Foxy Scarlet roll, a Philly roll which I hadn't ever had vegan or not, and yuzu cheesecake. I realized the specialty roll menu was Clue themed (the movie), and when I asked the server about it she said she didn't know why, but that not everyone realizes it is. I was so amused and they got bonus points for the seemingly random theme.

The miso soup was really light and yummy, I want more of the Philly roll, and the foxy Scarlet felt like a really good Mediterranean sandwich in sushi form. I didn't super love the cheesecake but it wasn't bad. I definitely want to come back and try some of the other rolls and gyoza. I highly recommend this place, and am super thankful for the wonderful staff for taking such good care of us and my little floof.

Everything on the menu was delicious, it was one of my first vegan restaurants in the city, and really a great unique spot. The price are similar to sushi with raw fish, but it makes sense given the uniqueness of each plate.

It's a really small place so I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time. A lot of their dishes are a little bit, but still not too salty which I appreciated. in one of the dishes, they're supposed to be one sushi piece that is spicy with a shot of sake in the middle of the bowl but for some reason, none of us felt like we got the spicy one so they're spice level here is pretty mild IMO.

I'd still prefer raw fish in sushi, but a great spot for anytime I want to eat sushi with a vegan friend.

The food was great! I will definitely be returning in the future. I had boddy and soul as well as hidden agenda. Both were well created dishes. I like how they use vegetables and plants as opposed to factory produced meat substitutes in their rolls.

Ordered the karage as an appetizer. My friend had the ramen. I did not care for the ramen personally. It was decent, but not something I would ever order in the future. I would recommend Mensho's vegan ramen, if that is what one is after. Wider selection. Greater depth of flavor.

Next time I hope to try the ceviche at Shizen.
      Overall great experience, tasty sushi.

I had a fantastic experience at Shizen. We made a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. The special rolls were fantastic! They had varied flavor and each one was unique. Our favorite was Boddy and Soul. The restaurant has similar decorations to Tane Izakaya in Berkeley, and we found out they're sister restaurants. It was like finding a second Tane with a whole new menu. I'm so glad this place exists. The wait staff was incredibly patient and warm.

I love that there's a sushi place that celebrates flavors with vegan ingredients. Everything we got was so flavorful and packed with surprising tastes! We loved every single thing we got!

The ambiance is very chill, light and airy. It is quite small so definitely make reservations if you want to come here!!

They have so many options and they all sound so good that it was hard to choose which ones to get! Just means I need to go back to try the rest! I can't wait to go back and try the other sushi!

TLDR : Wonderful ambiance, good vegetarian food, quick service - but wait times to get a table can be long.
Been visiting Shizen with friends who love Sushi and want to try vegetarian options. Shizen provides an wonderful experience while accommodating dietary preferences which is amazing.
They have a great selection of Sake and the cocktails are good as well.
      Highly recommended.

We got the open invitation roll, philadelphia roll, and the yakisoba which was the perfect amount of food for two people.

All of them were good but the yakisoba was surprisingly a standout! It had a really creamy beancurd with a flavor profile I haven't tasted before.

First of all I love the concept of an all vegan sushi restaurant! My friend and I had been meaning to try it for so long and finally got around to it, and I'm so glad we did! Each item we ordered was flavorful, well-textured, and overall very satisfying. We sat at the bar so we got to see a lot of the rolls being made, which was really cool. We got our food fairly quickly, and all the servers were very friendly! My favorite roll was the Boddy & Soul, but we'll definitely be back to try the other specialty rolls which all look so unique!
