MUMBAI: The British-era Bellasis bridge near Mumbai Central will be closed for vehicular traffic from Monday (Jun 24) for a period of 18 months to allow for its demolition and reconstruction.
The traffic police issued a notification on Saturday, announcing the suspension of vehicular traffic on this bridge, which connects Tardeo and Nagpada via Mumbai Central.
Western Railway (WR) has awarded a Rs 24 crore contract for the demolition and reconstruction of the railway section of the bridge.
Built in 1893, the 380-mt-long structure has surpassed its lifespan of 100 years. Both - the railway portion and approaches managed by BMC - will be rebuilt.
