Candidate Connection

David Gibbs participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 7, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and David Gibbs' responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Keep the economy growing

2) Pass required budget legislation on time
3) Create an environment for small businesses to grow[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

National Security -- I spent my adult life serving our country in the military and as a civilian defense contractor. The world is a more peaceful and prosperous place when America is engaged and leads.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. David Gibbs answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father. I have worked hard to match his work ethic and strong self-discipline.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Not one in particular. As a history lover, I've read hundreds of books on American political history.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, first and foremost. Openness and willingness to engage with with the people who elected me. Ability to get things done to solve problems.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I spent 25 years as an Air Force officer and leader. In my military and civilian careers, I've led organizations of over 500 people. I've learned how to lead and how to get things done.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Honesty! We need to remember who we work for -- the people.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like people to know that I worked hard for them and got things done -- for them.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
President Kennedy's assassination. I was seven.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked at McDonald's for two years in High School.[4]
What happened on your most awkward date?
My car broke down. It was tough getting my girlfriend's father to believe that.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas -- Watching the kids open their presents and seeing their excitement.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
I've read so many that I don't have a favorite.[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Read. I love to learn.[4]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The diversity of the body, representing people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and geographic areas.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
No.[4]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Creating lasting economic prosperity.[4]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
House Armed Services Committee Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Committee on Natural Resources[4]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
Yes.[4]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
As a freshman, I don't expect to have any significant opportunities, but I'd like to chair a committee or subcommittee at first.[4]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
One lady told me of the day she became a US citizen. Even after more than ten years, she still tears up when she talks about that day and the pride she felt at becoming an American.[4]

Ballotpedia biographical submission form

The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:

What is your political philosophy?

Focus on growing the economy and creating jobs. Commit to following the budget processes in Congress to pass the budget before the end of the year so we don't have to deal with omnibus Continuing Resolutions.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I have a reputation for getting things done. That is my major goal in Congress -- to get things done for the people of Nevada's 4th District.[4]
