I am 59 years old. I have been married for 38 years to my wife, Ann. We have 2 adult sons, Timothy and Anthony. I have lived in the Reno area for 44 years, since I was 15 years old. I graduated from Reed High in Sparks. I joined the Army when I was 17 and was honorably discharged in 1983. I have worked in the casino industry as a food service worker, cashier, and as a poker dealer for 5 years. I have been a pizza delivery driver and a pizza franchise owner. I owned my small business for 11 years. I have worked as a classified employee in the schools as a custodian and supervisor. I have been a substitute teacher, special education teacher, middle school and elementary school teacher. I've worked for three different school districts in Nevada: Washoe, Lyon, and Carson City. I have owned and managed several rental properties with my wife. My family has been very involved in the community with youth sports. I helped start the Sierra Youth Football League which allowed bigger kids to play football with kids their own age. Some were too big to play at all before we started. I have umpired and refereed for High Desert Officials Group, which my son Tim started. My son Anthony is a Math and weights/PE teacher, and high school head football coach. He has coached at North Valleys and is currently at Hug High School, which will open a new school this fall. I am running because of my vast experiences. I am not an attorney, or a politician. I am something different.

  • Without immediate action on the climate and carbon emissions, we won't have a country to debate over. This problem has been denied and swept aside by politicians for way too many years. We need to attack this problem now, with all the resolve and resources our country can muster, much the same as we did in World War II.
  • Everyone has the right to vote. This right is the only thing tat can protect our society from becoming an oligarchy, an authoritarian regime, or fascist society, or even a socialist or communist government. After everyone votes, the totals must be verified and then respected by the winners and the losers.
  • Schools and teachers are some of the most caring, compassionate, and hardworking members of our society. I have seen the future, I teach.

I am a teacher, my brother is a teacher, my sister is a teacher, and my son is a teacher. Public schools and education. Making sure that young families get the tax breaks, not the giant corporations. The weaponized testing as a means to not fund the schools or blame the educators for the poor schools not doing well. A new policy of education that looks at Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a focus. Making college affordable with childcare available so young parents can finish school. My wife's grandmother lived with us for 7 years so we could both work and I could finish college. Childcare is a family issue not a women's issue. Universal healthcare like every other industrialized nation. Rebuilding an infrastructure that allows us to seriously fight climate change. Giving grants for college in hard to fill positions like teachers and health care professionals. Make stealing from the public schools and calling it "vouchers" federally illegal. Not allowing those who believe when the sperm meets the egg it is a human being, to take away birth control pills after outlawing abortion. A fair tax structure. Trickle-down economics doesn't work.

My father was my hero and my role model. He lived through the great depression, fought in World War II and Korea, was the father to 8 kids and always made time for them, was the most voracious reader I have ever met, had a huge vocabulary, and always tried to follow the teachings of Jesus.

I have 2 films that I would like to recommend: "Taking Chance," and "The Best of Enemies." Taking Chance was about an escort officer for a young Marine who was killed in action in Iraq. It showed how the last 20 years of war have affected this entire nation and how close veterans are. It showed how our democracy is being held together with young men willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for us. It showed the pain that wars leave behind. It was based on a true story.

The film "Best of Enemies" was about a member of the KKK and an African American mother working on desegregation with a school board. It showed how racism is usually rooted in ignorance and how all people have the same basic wants, needs, and desires. It gave me hope and made me feel like we can all do more to help one another. it was also based on a true story.

I think life experiences are important. I have always tried to be hard working and honest. I have been in the military and have taken the same oath as those in congress; to defend the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. It is important to be open to good ideas no matter where they come from. Don't be afraid to vote on something because it might make someone from the other party look good. Don't be afraid to call out those who are wrong, even if it upsets those in your party. Don't make every decision on whether it will cost you an election or not; do what is right even if you must fall on your sword and look for a new job because you voted your conscience and got voted out. These are the qualities that are hard to find in the current House of Representatives.

I believe I can accomplish anything. I don't listen to people who only complain and don't have any solutions. I always found a way to accomplish my goals when others thought it was impossible. I listen to others and respect their ideas. I enjoy finding common ground with colleagues and solving problems. I respect the fact that there are experts in different fields who are more knowledgeable than I am and like to be informed before making decisions.

Listen to the people. Vote your conscience. Call out those who are wrong or have not lived up to their oath. If you are open and honest, you have nothing to fear. Make the people of your state proud to have you as a representative.

I remember when I was six and Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed. I remember seeing my mom crying while watching on television.

I was a paper boy with the Denver Post throughout seventh and eighth grade. I had a route with over 1,000 papers.

I liked the book "Lovey," by Mary MacCracken. It was about a child with severe behavior disorders and a very caring special education teacher. It made me want to complete my special education degree and work with children who have special needs. I read this book over 25 years ago.

Superman because he always used his powers for good and fought evil.

"Not Enough Love in the World" by Don Henley

I love the fact that the people can vote out a lawmaker after only 2 years in office. If you want to stay in office, you have to run every two years. I also like the fact that the house is represented by the population of each state; the number of congress people coincides with the population. The U.S. House looks like America. Every type of person is represented; black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native, or anyone else, all religions, and both men and women. This is our strength as a nation.

It can be beneficial; however, I think life experiences are even more important. You have to have lived the struggle to completely understand it. I was born the sixth out of eight children. I have worked in casinos. I have been in the military. I have helped raise two successful children. My wife and I struggled to find affordable childcare. We kept our sons on our health insurance until they were 24 years old and graduated from college. We understand the expense. I have owned and managed several rental properties. I was both a pizza delivery driver, and a pizza franchise owner for 11 years. Only a small business owner can understand the struggles of owning your own business. I have worked in the schools as a classified custodian, substitute teacher, and certified teacher. I struggled to finish college, and this has been made even harder and more expensive since I graduated. My wife, Ann, is living with heart failure. Her one prescription is over $550 per month for Entresto. She was sent by care flight airplane to Stanford University a little over 4 years ago. Her total bill was over $850,000. If she had been out of work after a layoff, like during the great recession, we would have had to declare bankruptcy. No experience in the state legislature can match these experiences.

Climate change. Stopping this will require both parties to stop gridlock in the senate. I believe we need to abolish the filibuster. This is not in the constitution and is a tool of obstructionism. The senate already has the great equalizer, allowing every state to have 2 senators regardless of their population. We cannot rebuild our infrastructure and fight climate change if we allow the minority of the population to continue obstructing progress and making it nearly impossible to pass anything through the senate. We need a stable economy and cannot do that if we continue to rely on the world market for oil and gas. The energy market must be stabilized if we want to have a robust economy. National security is in jeopardy with fuel costs, but also from environmental damage and the waves of immigrants that we will have to deal with. We will have people moving within our borders and it will be a battle of those who have and those who do not. The economic damage from losing property will be enormous. If we continue to have gridlock in Washington, we will reach a point of no return. This is the belief of scientists. I believe in science.

Armed services and education. I would like to be involved with the Small Business Administration as well.

This is the perfect term. Many districts are so Republican or Democrat that a primary becomes necessary to challenge an incumbent. Two years keeps a changing house with different viewpoints possible.

I think it is a privilege and honor to live in a country with a government of the people, by the people, and for the people; where we can change the entire House of Representatives every 2 years if that is what we decide to do. The voters can decide how long we should keep a certain candidate.

I want to be the representative that others model themselves after.

I like to hear people's experiences and memories about school. The schools have changed so much during my career and especially in my lifetime. I love to hear about people who have struggled, persevered, and reached a goal. People who made their own opportunities and didn't take no for an answer. Unfortunately, I hear how it is impossible to afford school and support yourself working. I hear from women who can't find childcare and don't want to re-enter the workforce until their child is in school. I hear about how expensive insurance; health care and prescriptions are. I hear about schools and how some have given up on the regular public schools and look for alternatives. I hear about how hard it is to support a family with the prices continuing to climb.

I believe compromise is built into every bill that is voted on. There are always parts of bills that one side or the other do not agree with, however, that is necessary to get anything passed. We cannot pass a bill without

bipartisanship. This only happens if both parties feel they have gained something. When bills are passed with a super majority and the other party has lost their voice in the process, it becomes a game of waiting for retaliation.

The tax structure is completely out of synch with today's society. The tax breaks should go to the young families, small businesses and those who want to help end our dependence on fossil fuels. The corporations have had tax breaks and trickle-down economics throughout my whole working career. It has created enormous wealth but has also caused enormous pressures on young families and the working class. It has helped cause poverty, homelessness and failing schools. It has made retirement an impossible dream for many people. We need to go back to the tax policies that allow the economy to give opportunities to those who need them. A hand up. The best schools and most affordable colleges in the world. Socialized medicine like every other industrialized nation. These are all possible with the right policies.
