Chinese automaker Geely's premium electric vehicle brand, Zeekr, has introduced a new electric vehicle charging solution that allows for a 500 km range after just 15 minutes of charging.

The company unveiled this innovative technology at a battery plant owned by Geely Holding Group in Zhejiang province.

The key to this fast charging capability lies in Zeekr's lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. By utilizing these batteries, Zeekr aims to reduce its reliance on external suppliers for critical electric vehicle components in a highly competitive market. The upcoming 007 sedan from Zeekr will be the first model to feature these batteries, boasting a rapid-charging capability that enables a 500 km (300 miles) driving range within 15 minutes. This impressive system operates at an 800-voltage level.

This strategic move aligns with Zeekr's goal of enhancing its self-sufficiency in the electric vehicle market, a trend observed among various manufacturers. For instance, Zeekr's Chinese competitor, Nio, plans to separate its battery production unit to manage costs effectively.

Previously, Zeekr relied on nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries from CATL, the world's largest battery maker, to power its 001 crossover and 009 multipurpose vehicles. However, with the introduction of these new LFP batteries, Zeekr is taking a significant step towards achieving faster charging times and greater driving range.

CATL, on the other hand, has also made strides in the fast-charging capabilities of electric vehicles. The company has introduced fast-charging batteries for Li Auto's first pure electric MPV MEGA, enabling a 500 km (300 miles) driving range with a 12-minute charging time. This further emphasizes the industry's growing emphasis on fast-charging capabilities in the electric vehicle sector.

With Zeekr's latest innovation, the electric vehicle market is witnessing a significant advancement in charging technology. As companies like Zeekr and Nio strive to enhance their self-sufficiency and improve charging times, consumers can look forward to more efficient and convenient electric vehicles in the near future.
