Search for Bhole Baba intensifies after Hathras tragedy kills 116, victims still being identified
Following the tragic stampede in Hathras that claimed 116 lives, Uttar Pradesh police conducted a search operation at the Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district for Bhole Baba, who led the Satsang. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar stated, "We did not find Baba ji inside the campus...He is not here..."
Aligarh District Magistrate Vishak G Iyer reported that 23 bodies were brought to Aligarh, and three injured individuals are receiving treatment. "A total of 23 bodies have been brought to Aligarh...Three injured people from the Hathras incident are getting treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. Out of them, two are in stable condition whereas one is in critical condition. We have talked to the hospital administration, and the procedure to take the (critical) patient to the ICU is underway..." said Iyer.
Hathras Chief Medical Officer Dr. Manjeet Singh confirmed that 32 bodies were brought to Hathras, with 19 identified so far. "A total of 116 people have died so far...32 bodies were brought here and 19 of them have been identified. We are identifying the rest of them..." said Singh.
Cause of the Stampede
The exact cause of the incident is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that suffocation at the crowded venue led to discomfort among attendees, sparking panic and causing the stampede. One survivor recounted, "There was a huge crowd, and everyone was rushing to leave. There was no way out, and everybody fell on each other. When I tried to move out, motorcycles parked outside blocked my way. Many fainted while others died."
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. He also stated, "The state government will go in-depth to find whether it was an accident or a conspiracy. We will take strict action against those responsible for the tragedy." President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims' families.
