The 48-year-old Mumbai Ranji-winning captain takes over the mantle of the head coach from former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar, who was removed from the post in December last year as part of BCCI's 'internal restructuring.

    Story outline

    • Former Mumbai captain Amol Muzumdar has been appointed head coach of Indian women's cricket team
    • His first challenge is coaching India in back-to-back Tests against England & Australia in December
    • Indian women's team had been without a permanent coach for nearly a year before this appointment
    • Muzumdar's appointment is a two-year contract, with the aim to guide the team with his experience
Mumbai: It's the return of Amol Muzumdar to the national squad, in a different role. Ten months on, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced that it has found its head coach of the Indian women's team in Muzumdar. The veteran player had been shortlisted by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape in June.

The 48-year-old Mumbai Ranji-winning captain takes over the mantle of the head coach from former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar, who was removed from the post in December last year as part of BCCI's 'internal restructuring.' For almost a year, the Indian women's team did not have a permanent head coach - with Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Nooshin Al Khadeer taking turns on an interim basis.

As head coach, his first assignment will be the back-to-back Tests as India take on England and Australia at the Wankhede in December.

For cricket fanatics, Muzumdar's score card reads like a dream. He has clocked over 11,000 First Class runs in 171 matches, including 30 centuries during his 21-year epic career in domestic cricket for Mumbai. He had later padded up for Assam and Andhra.

"I am deeply honoured and privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian women's cricket team. I thank the CAC and the BCCI for placing their trust in me and believing in my vision and roadmap for Team India. This is a huge responsibility and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel," said Muzumdar, who has been given a two-year term.

Muzumdar was a batting coach with IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and the South African team when they toured India in 2019. With him as the head coach, Mumbai had clinched their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title last season and also reached the final of the Ranji Trophy in the 2022 season. He has also worked a fair bit at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Muzumdar, a contemporary of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, was hailed as the next big sensation after he made an unbeaten 260 in a Ranji match, his 1st-class debut, against Haryana. In 1994 he was vice-captain of India under-19s, and played alongside Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for India A. But luck did not favour him as he failed to make it to the national playing side.
