Nik Wallenda, the daredevil who has done tightrope walks across Times Square, the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls, has something even more explosive planned: He wants to do a high-wire walk over an active volcano.

On March 4, Wallenda will aim to become the first person to walk directly over a volcano, in Nicaragua. He has chosen the Volcan Masaya o Santiago, which has an active lava lake. Because of the extreme heat and sulfuric fumes, Wallenda will have to wear a gas mask and a blindfold to pull off the stunt.

In a statement to the media, Wallenda said, “After spending years scouting and researching volcanoes, I fully realise why no one has ever attempted this: Nature is extremely unpredictable. It is the most dangerous walk I have ever attempted, and that alone makes it very intimidating. I am pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and it is scary, but I am up to the challenge.”
