The world becomes a better place when people hear words of love, care, gratitude, and support. Ageing is often associated with physical and mental deterioration, however, this doesn't mean elderly parents deserve any scorn.

RPG group chairman, Harsh Goenka, recently took to Twitter to inspire thousands of his followers about the significance of practising gratitude and being more kind to one’s ageing parents. He shared a 2-minute clip that highlighted the virtues of selflessness and sacrifice, and how important it is to acknowledge elder parents and treat them with kindness.

His post soon went viral with over 10K likes and thousands of retweets and comments. Industrialist Anand Mahindra too joined the long list of those who liked the post, he retweeted it with his unique perspective. The 67-year-old began by admitting that it was a poignant message that resonated with him and other elderly parents. However, he said that there were many children in the world who have to spend much of their lives erasing the mistakes and missteps of their parents.

“A very poignant message that naturally resonates with us elderly parents. But it also occurred to me, Harsh, that often, many children in the world have to spend much of their lives erasing
the mistakes & missteps of their parents!” read Mahindra’s tweet.
    The Parable
The video shared by Goenka is a parable with life lessons from a conversation between a pencil and an eraser. “I’m sorry, you get hurt because of me. Whenever I make a mistake you’re always there to erase it. But, as you make my mistake vanish away. You lose a part of yourself and get smaller each time,” laments the pencil.

To answer the pencil’s apprehension, the eraser says, “That’s true, but I don’t mind. You see, I was made to do this, I was made to help you every time you did something wrong. Even though one day I know I’ll be gone, I’m happy with my job. So please, stop worrying. I will not be happy to see you sad.”

The underlying moral, as the video shows, is how parents spend their life supporting their children unconditionally. “Our parents are just like the eraser, and we are the pencil. They’re always there for their children, cleaning up their mistakes.”

    On Parenting & Gratitude
While duty towards parents is supreme, Mahindra chairman’s views also hold true as there have been many who have been working towards altering the course of their lives that have been impacted by the misfortunes of their elders.

In all, the biggest takeaway from Goenka’s tweet and Mahindra’s words is that gratitude and kindness go a long way.
