Kiran Rao Vs Vanga: In a recent promotional event for her upcoming movie ‘Laapataa Ladies’ the director briefly spoke about rampant misogyny in Bollywood films. Although she did not specifically mention ‘Animal’, nevertheless, the director took offense and lashed out at her.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga is in no mood to spare anyone.

The director has engaged in a war of words with several people who criticised his latest film - the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Animal’.

His latest spat is with Aamir Khan's ex-wife, director-producer Kiran Rao.

In a recent promotional event for her upcoming movie ‘Laapataa Ladies’ the Rao briefly spoke about rampant misogyny in Bollywood films. Although she did not specifically mention ‘Animal’, nevertheless, the director took offense and lashed out at her.

Referring to ‘Dil’, an old Aamir Khan film which has a song with objectionable lyrics such as “Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’ and a scene where Khan’s character Raja attempts to rape Madhu (played by Madhuri Dixit), the director said, ‘I want to tell that woman that go and ask Amir Khan about the song ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’... what was that?”

In an interview with the Quint, Rao reacted to Vanga’s allegations. She admitted that she was surprised that the ‘Kabir Singh’ director targeted her as she did not name his movies directly. She also pointed out that if the film-maker has an issue with Khan, he should take it up with him without involving her. “If Mr. Vanga has something to tell Aamir, he should tell him man to man. I'm not responsible for Aamir's work or Aamir Khan. I wish Mr. Reddy would address his questions directly to Mr. Khan,” she said.

The pair ended their 16-year-old marriage in 2021 and settled for an amicable divorce. Together, they co-parent their son Azad Rao Khan.

Rao was also quick to praise her former husband for admitting his mistakes and reflecting on his movie choices. She pointed out that he had apologised for doing movies such as ‘Dil’ in an episode of his chat show ‘Satyameva Jayate’.

“There are very few people who would look back at their body of work and apologise for doing something problematic in retrospect. And that's laudable,” she admitted.

Aside from Rao, Vanga had also gotten into arguments with Bollywood veterans such as Javed Akhtar, who pointed out problematic aspects from the movie ‘Animal’, particularly the violence on women. Reacting to the lyricist's criticism of Animal', the director said that he wanted to 'puke' when he saw 'Mirzapur', a web series produced by his son Farhan Akhtar.

‘Laapata Ladies’ is scheduled to be released in 2024.
