At Rs 68 crore, 'The Kerala Story' crossed the figures of the Hindi version of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil period drama ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2’ which earned about Rs 21 crore.
Sudipto Sen’s ‘The Kerala Story’ may have started out as controversy’s favourite child, but the producers are surely laughing their way to the bank.

The Adah Sharma starrer has earned a whopping Rs 68 crore within six days of release, according to Sacnilk Entertainment.

With this collection, the movie has surpassed the lifetime collections of several big budget films, such as the Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Selfiee’, Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Shehzada’ etc. It also crossed the figures of the Hindi version of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil period drama ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2’ which earned about Rs 21 crore.

Despite facing immense flak as well as trolling for its contentious storyline, the movie has gone from strength to strength, with box-office collections improving each day. Although ‘The Kerala Story’ started with single-digit numbers at the box-office (Rs 8 crore), from the second day onwards, it collected double-digits.

The movie narrates the story of three women, Shalini (Sharma), Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani), and Nimah (Yogita Bihani), who are enticed by their friend Asifa (Sonia Balani) to join the ISIS. Helmed by Sen, the movie is produced by director-producer Vipul Shah, who directed the Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Namastey London’.

Earlier, the producers faced flak for claiming that 32,000 women from Kerala (primarily from the Hindu and Christian communities) underwent radicalisation) and became ISIS brides. However, after facing intense backlash and allegations of misrepresenting facts , the number was brought down to three.

The movie also faced backlash for fanning hatred against Muslims and stirring communal tensions. This led to its ban in states such as Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. However, some states, like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, declared it tax free.

'Ponniyin Selvan: 2' Crosses Rs 160 Cr Domestically
The Mani Ratnam directorial has been a resounding success, both commercially, and critically. The Aishwarya Rai-Vikram film collected about Rs 160.86 crore in 13 days. Overseas, the epic period drama has performed phenomenally well, earning about Rs 300 crore. However, it has failed to surpass the box-office collections of its predecessor, 'Ponniyin Selvan : I' which minted Rs 500 crore at the global box-office. The franchise traces the story of the ancient Chola dynasty.
