    In memoriam: PM Modi, Mamata, Smriti Irani mourn Bappi Lahiri's demise, Sachin-Bhajji remember playing his songs in Team India dressing room

    India woke up to a grim morning. Singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri, fondly called Bappi Da, passed away in the wee hours on Wednesday at the age of 69.

    Bappi Da was known for his iconic style - dark shades, layers of gold chains and jewellery coupled with his wide smile and rock star persona.

    As soon as the news broke, condolences started pouring in for the late legendary singer. From politicians to sport stars and movie personalities, tributes flooded Twitter.

    Sachin Tendulkar said he always enjoyed Bappi Da's music. One of his favourite songs was 'Yaad Aa Raha Hai' from 1953 Mithun Chakraborty-starrer 'Disco Dancer'. "(I) heard it several times in the dressing room. The range of his talent was truly amazing. You will always be remembered, Bappi Da," he added.


    Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh said that Lahiri's songs always played in Team India's dressing rooms.


    Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh expressed grief over the the passing away of the legendary musician. He said the singer will be fondly remembered for his mesmerising musical compositions which are loved by people of all ages.


    Prime Minister Narendra Modi said people across generations can relate to Lahiri's works. "His music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions... His lively nature will be missed by everyone," he wrote in his post.


    In a two-part post, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock about Lahiri's untimely demise. She recalled him as a boy from North Bengal, who rose to fame and success by his sheer talent and hard work. "... (You) made us proud by his musical contributions... and we will contribute to remember the genius," she added.

    The WB government had honoured Lahiri with the state's highest state civilian award - Banga Bibhushan - in 2018.


    Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani called Lahiri's music timeless. She said it will continue to enthral generations to come.


    Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that Lahiri will be remembered for generations for his great musical journey.


    President Ram Nath Kovind said Lahiri was a 'matchless' singer-composer. "His songs found popularity not only in India but abroad. His diverse range included youthful as well as soulful melodies. His memorable songs will continue to delight listeners for long time," the heartfelt note read.


    Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that India lost yet another veteran singer and composer. "Bappi Da will always be remembered for his foot-tapping numbers," he wrote.


    Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Lahiri's demise leaves a big void in the world of Indian music. "Bappi Da will be remembered for his versatile singing and lively nature," he wrote.


    Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs & Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, took to Twitter to pray for the legend's soul.

    "Deeply saddened by the demise of popular music composer & singer Bappi Lahiri Ji. My condolences to his family, fans & admirers," he added.


    Biplab Kumar Deb, Chief Minister of Tripura, sai he was saddened by the news. He thanked Lahiri for introducing disco to India and revolutionising Indian music.
    "His music will remain in our hearts forever," he said.

    Dara Singh's actor-son Vindu Dara Singh remembered Lahiri as someone who always sported a smile. "... a brilliant composer, singer and a beautiful human being," his caption read.


    'Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story' director Hansal Mehta said he had the good fortune of working closely with him for Sanjay Gupta's White Feather Films project and a P&G ad. "Another legend gone... Man of incredible melody and talent," he wrote.

    'The Chargesheet' producer Ashoke Pandit woke up to the news, and said he was shocked to hear about the demise of his rock star neighbour.

    "Can’t believe my next door neighbour is no more. Your music will always remain in our hearts," he wrote.


    Counselage India founder and Managing Partner Suhel Seth said he was 'deeply deeply saddened' at the news.
