Gadar 2’ has turned out to be a box-office phenomenon.

The much-hyped sequel to the beloved 2001 blockbuster ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ has crossed Rs 515 crore at the box-office.

Yet, the film has drawn criticism for going overboard with nationalism and appearing unabashedly jingoistic. It also drew ire for portraying Pakistan in a poor light.

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah lashed out at ‘Gadar 2’ makers during a recent interview.

In an interview with Free Press Journal, the eminent actor termed the success of movies such as ‘Gadar 2’, ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’ as harmful. “It’s not enough to love your country but beat drums about it and you have to create imaginary enemies. What these people don’t realise is that what they are doing is very harmful. In fact, films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2, I haven’t seen them but I know what they are about, it’s disturbing that films like Kashmir Files are so massively popular…” he told the journal.

He also encouraged filmmakers like Hansal Mehta and Sudhir Mishra to keep on making films and honing their craft even if their movies do not perform well at the box-office. “A hundred years later people will see Bheed and they will also see Gadar 2 and see which one portrays the truth of our times because film is the only medium that could do that. It’s hard to resort to abstraction and capture life as it is,” he said.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, ‘Bheed’ is a social drama movie that explores the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis in India. The movie stars Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Dia Mirza and others.
