    Our body is made up of 75% water, and carries out all the essential functions in the body. Water helps in carrying nutrients to different parts of the body.

    United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 as the official World Water Day, focusing on the importance of water. This year, the theme is ‘Nature for Water’, which explores nature-based solutions to water challenges of the 21st century.

    On the 25th World Water Day, Obino's Diet coach Vriti Srivastav shares some brilliant tips to keep in mind when drinking water.

    Use a glass and go slow
    Sip water slowly than guzzling it down at once. Sipping water and allowing it to stay in the mouth and then passing through the food pipe helps the alkaline saliva reach the stomach to neutralise acid levels in the stomach. Chugging water directly through a bottle causes water to run down the throat, missing out on carrying saliva to the stomach.

    Your body is thirsty, not hungry
    Don't confuse thirst signals for hunger. If you drink water regularly, the body won't confuse thirst signals for hunger and prevent overeating.

    Don't flood your stomach
    Avoid drinking too much water before and during meals. Flooding the stomach with water during meals dilutes the digestive juices affecting the process of digestion.

    Stay hydrated
    Stay hydrated pre and post-exercise. Sweating during exercise causes loss of water, hence it is essential to stay well hydrated while exercising. Lack of water in the body also causes muscle cramps during exercise.

    Morning dose of warm water
    Start the day with warm water post-wake up. Warm water helps aid in the process of peristalsis (contraction & relaxation of muscles) as the muscles are at resting stage during sleep. Directly ingesting food post wake-up startles the muscles, but consuming water can help in preparing the muscles for better movement.

    Opt for room temperature water
    Water at room temperature is preferable to avoid stress on the senses. Too cold or too hot water tends to shock the senses.
