Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has introduced a new initiative called 'Kere Mitra' (lake friend) and 'Hasiru Mitra' (green friend) to engage citizens in the maintenance of parks and lakes in Bengaluru. As per a TOI report, interested individuals can register as volunteers on BBMP's website, as announced by the office of the special commissioner (lakes/horticulture) on October 19. The registration window opened on Thursday and will close on October 30.

Currently, only about 100 people have registered, but BBMP officials anticipate a rise in numbers in the coming days. Citizens can apply to maintain lakes and parks in their respective wards. In addition to ensuring cleanliness and preventing encroachments, volunteers can also mobilize corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for the development of these areas. Their responsibilities include daily monitoring of development works, better management of premises, and ensuring officials fulfill their assigned duties on time.

Verification of entries will be conducted by BBMP officials before entrusting individuals with the responsibility of maintaining lakes or parks. Kere Mitras will oversee activities such as sweeping pathways, cleaning bund slopes, de-weeding, inlet and outlet cleaning, wetland cleaning, jungle clearance, home guard attendance, lake timings, and monitoring officials' adherence to their assigned tasks. Hasiru Mitras, on the other hand, will monitor daily sweeping, pruning of hedges, shrubs, and plants, watering, lawn mowing, borewell maintenance, gate control, garbage removal, and electrical works in parks.

Vijaykumar Haridas, BBMP's chief engineer for lakes, expressed his belief that this citizen and local participation initiative will significantly contribute to the proper maintenance of lakes. The BBMP hopes that with public support, lakes and parks in Bengaluru can be well-preserved for the benefit of the community.
