The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Registrar General of India have started to introduce a feature that will deactivate an Aadhaar once the death certificate of the Aadhaar holder is issued. Therefore, an Aadhaar will die with the death of its holder.

As of now, Aadhaar does not automatically become inactive or update to reflect the date of death. It is also not yet needed to obtain death certificates. What family members can do now is to lock details of the deceased individual's biometrics linked with Aadhaar to prevent any misuse.
