Mumbai received heavy rains early Monday, leading to severe waterlogging in many parts. The city received over 300 mm rain in just about six hours, throwing normal lives out of the gear. The heavy rains severely disrupted traffic and affected train services.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am today.

"Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services," BMC said.

BMC has also warned that more rains are expected today and tomorrow. IMD has meanwhile issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours in Mumbai.

Initially, BMC announced holiday for the first session 'for all BMC, Government and Private schools and colleges in Mumbai (BMC area)'. Later in the day, BMC announced holiday for the second session for schools and colleges as well.

    Train Services Affected

"Due to heavy rain & High tide in Mumbai, local train movement in the suburban section is effected. kindly avoid travel unless unavoidable," Central Railway tweeted earlier today.

Some Mail Express trains were stranded because of heavy rains and water logging at various locations early morning. Central Railway said that the the passengers have been provided with the water, food and all assistance required.

"The services on Harbour Line were running normally till 9:30 AM. After 9:30 AM, due to the water of Mithi River at Chunabhatti Station of Harbour Line and due to heavy rains, a lot of water has accumulated on the track. Due to this, the local services at Chunabhatti Station were disrupted," said Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, CPRO, Central Railway.

Later authorities used pumps to drain out water from the tracks and resumed services on some lines.

More than 30 lakh commuters travel daily on the Central Railway's suburban network.

Due to waterlogging triggered by rain, many BEST buses have also been diverted from their regular route.
