Pet industry thrives during pandemic; prices of exotic dogs go up

Rana Atheya, who runs DogSpot, an online platform for pets in India, says a big spurt in pet adoption was seen in the first lockdown and there could be a repeat now.

    Synopsis

In Delhi, Tegha Kennel, which sells exotic dog breeds, has seen the demand for unusual lap dogs like the Maltese go through the roof.

These are dog’s days – especially if the pet in question is an unusual breed. A family in Delhi bought two mixed-breed puppies in May -- a Poochon, a cross between a toy poodle and a bichon frise, and a Cavoodle, a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a poodle, for Rs 95,000 and Rs 3.75 lakh, respectively. They wanted small exotic dogs and were willing to shell out anything for them – even if the prices had doubled from a year
