With the deadline for filing wine shop licence applications just a day away, the excise department in Hyderabad has already received an huge influx of 60,000 applications. As per a TOI report, although the department had set a target of 80,000 to one lakh applications, the early surge has been welcomed by retailers, as it enables them to better manage their inventory through early auctions.

In comparison to the previous year's auction, which saw around 69,000 applications, this year has witnessed more than 60,000 applications within the initial 10 days of the application process.

Notably, Khammam and Shamshabad have reported the highest number of applications, while Hyderabad's application numbers have been comparatively low as anticipated. With over 3,000 applicants for 100 shops, Shamshabad holds the highest number of applicants in the state. This trend is anticipated to continue until the application window concludes on August 18.

The substantial number of applications has brought satisfaction to both the excise department and wine retailers alike.

For wine retailers, especially those dealing in premium brands, a common practice is to place limited orders until November and then ramp up orders significantly for the peak season starting in December. The biennial tendering process for wine shops typically kicks off in October or November. However, due to the delayed process, premium brands often face limited stock availability.

Starting the process ahead of schedule this year is expected to ensure timely stock availability, a situation benefiting wineries, retailers, and the Telangana excise department. It is likely to result in increased revenue collection and foster a mutually beneficial environment.
