Same-Sex Marriage: Apex court rejects legal status with a majority of 3:2 verdict
The Supreme Court, in a 3:2 verdict, rejected petitions seeking same-sex marriage in India. The matter was decided by a five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by CJI D Y Chandrachud. All five judges agreed that there was no fundamental right for non-heterosexual couples to marry, with the majority view being that the legislature must decide on the issue of same-sex marriage. The Bench also included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, P S Narasimha, and Hima Kohli.
