UK Election results 2024 insights: How did parties with less vote percentage get so many seats?

    Synopsis

UK has a very different and significant electoral structure with a unique voting pattern that often results in parties getting less vote percentage, grabbing a lion share of seats. UK's plurality voting system is quite different from the election pattern seen in the United States or other countries in Europe.

UK Election results 2024 insights: How did parties with less vote percentage get so many seats?IANS
The UK election results are formally declared with Keir Starmer's Labour Party grabbing an outright majority with Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party falling well behind in the poll race. Interestingly, even though the Labour Party have a majority share of seats, its vote percentage stands at a mere 34%. If that is not all, Reform UK managed to win only 4 seats with a significant 14 percent vote share but the Conservatives attained 121 seats with only 24 per cent. This calculation factor has raised many eyebrows and people still cannot figure out why this happens during UK general elections.

UK General Elections 2024: Which party got the highest vote share?

The highest vote share of 34%, of course, went to the Labour Party, who bagged 412 seats in the UK General Elections 2024. Meanwhile, the Conservatives cam in second with a 24% vote share and 121 seats. Lib Dem and Reform UK followed next with 12% and 14% vote share respectively but with a little twist in the number of seats. With their 12% vote share, Lib Dem managed to secure a whopping 71 seats whereas Reform UK could manage only 4.

UK General Elections vote share continues to surprise

If the vote share of Green Party is observed, it managed only a 7% vote share but managed to get the same number of seats as Reform UK. The three biggest surprises are the Scottish National Party (SNP) who managed to win 9 seats with a 2% vote share, Sinn Fein with 7 seats with just 0.7% vote share and Plaid Cymru gaining 4 seats with another 0.7%.

Why does this vote-seat anomaly occur in UK General Elections?

According to reports, UK follows a 'first-past-the-post' voting system, which means political parties winning many seats by small margins will still reflect poorly in the overall vote share percentage. Moreover, some political parties are strong in some consolidated regions, which means that they would perform better in a selected area and grab seats from there but their overall vote share in terms of the entire country, would be very less. For example, the Sinn Fein are very popular in Ireland-dominated regions, and therefore manage to secure seats from these areas but their presence and political activity across the country is minimal and therefore, do not get a significant vote percentage country-wise.
