Suella Braverman, Britain’s interior minister resigned on Wednesday. The India-UK trade deal has been snared by Braverman's comments about Indian migrants overstaying their visas. The UK's new interior minister will be Grant Shapps, who was removed as transport minister when Liz Truss became UK PM.

From 2020 to 2022, Braverman served as an Attorney General and was elected to the UK Parliament from Fairham. Under former PM Theresa May, she worked in the Brexit department as a junior minister but resigned in protest over her proposed Brexit deal.

Earlier this year, Braverman was among the leading contenders to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the UK, but she lost the race in the second round. Under Truss, she and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng were appointed interior ministers in September.

She denounced post-Indo-Pakistan cricket violence as uncontrolled migration and divisiveness. Reportedly, Braverman was concerned that a trade deal with India would increase immigration to the UK.

The Indian and British governments are close to signing a free trade agreement, which aims to increase bilateral trade, facilitate the smooth movement of people between the two countries, and cut tariffs on Scotch whiskey imports into the Indian market. As a result of Barverman's comments, the deadline has now been pushed back.

On Tuesday, in damage control mode, Braverman said the UK had been 'profoundly enriched by immigration from India'. As for India, it has processed every complaint regarding visa overstaying.
