FIFA World Cup 2022 has popped several unique stories, and one such is that of two brothers who were born in Spain and now play for different nations. Nico and Iñaki Williams were born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, who migrated to Europe hoping for a better future for their children. However, the brothers have ended up playing for different teams - Nico for Spain and Iñaki for Ghana.

Iñaki, 28, the elder of the two, got picked by Ghana to represent them in the world cup this week. The 20-year-old Nico was chosen by Spain. Interestingly, both of them represent Atletico Bilbao, and Iñaki has played a record 200 games for the Spanish club. And now, the younger Williams has expressed his wish to play against Ghana.

Nico said that his desire to play against Ghana was a sibling rivalry, claiming they had “a bit of needle” growing up, which he hoped to repeat professionally. If the brothers do play against each other, they would be only the second sibling pair to face each other, after Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng. Jerome represented Germany, while Kevin-Prince played for Ghana in the 2010 and 2014 editions of the FIFA World Cup.



According to media reports, Iñaki raised Nico in part as their parents would spend most of the time working outdoors. Nico himself confirmed that Iñaki was the reason for his being into football. He also credited Spanish legends like Sergio Busquets, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Dani Carvajal for helping him during his dream debut against Switzerland.

In the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, Ghana is placed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay. Spain is placed in Group E, with Japan, Germany, and Costa Rica.
